    C1 third arm bearing

Does anyone have an easy way to get the third arm bearing out. I have an article from a Summer 1992 edition, but the parts for the tool he used are not easy to find.

Anyone else with a way to get it out?

    Thanks,

    Don

      Don,

Besides Rich's excellent post, here is a link to Rare Corvette's How To Articles. There is an article there on third arm bearing removal and a whole lot more.

When I did mine earlier this summer, nothing would get the bearing moving.I ended up purchasing a nut to fit the stud from McMaster Carr and after threading it on the stud, clamping the nut in a vise. I then used a hammer and block of hard wood all around the housing until there was movement. After that I had no further problems with removal.

        Thanks,

I did find and order nuts and a bolt with correct threads from boltdepot.com and will try the vice approach first.

          Don,

It can't hurt to soak it in penetrating oil first. I like Kroil's but there are others.

            Hi! Donald

I made this bearing puller for the third arm bearing. It helps if you soak the bearing in penetrating oil. Email me, ray63@rochester.rr.com , with your address if you would like to borrow the puller. I will send it to you.

Now that I have the bearing out, thanks to Ray Carney and his tool, do I pack the new bearing with bearing grease when I install?

Not if the new bearing has a seal on BOTH sides.

                  Third arm paint or natural?

One more question. My 1960 AIM is pretty clear for what get painted and not as far as the front suspension, but I don't find anything on the third arm whether it is painted or natural?

                  Thanks,

                  Don
