    67 gas cap

    Somehow the last time I drove my 67 I filled up without putting the gas cap back on . The gas stations I visited that day didn't have anything so I need a replacement. I was wondering how true the repros like I can find at Long Island Corvette or Corvette Central are to the original. In comparing the description of the original in the TIM&JG to the description and pic in the Long Island catalog I'm not sure. Should I be looking to obtain an original? Thanks!

    I expect that the "reproductions" are actually the current GM SERVICE cap, GM #3952708, still available from GM.

    This cap is very close to the original cap used on your car. The primary differences are as follows:

    1) the 3952708 uses a black nitrile rubber gasket instead of the brown cellulosic fiber (cardboard) gasket used on the original cap. The rubber gasket is functionally far superior. You can change to the cardboard gasket which is available from Dr. Rebuild;

    2) the 3952708 has a somewhat shinier zinc plating than the original caps had (including the original 3952708 which was used in PRODUCTION for the 1969 model year);

    3) there may be minor differences in the configuration/welding of the hand-hold bracket to the cap shell;

    4) there is a minor difference in the Stant logo stamped on the underside of the cap.

      Current repo/ GM part has a ODD S logo and does not have the small SMC logo. Wrong as wrong can be especially for 50 bucks. There is another repro with good logos but rubber.

      There are people that restore originals or you can buy the outright for a very very fair price, email me for the details if correct is what you want to do and I'll pull the contact info where I got mine.

            Keep in mind, though, that just because I might know some of the details does not necessarily mean that I subscribe to the notion that all of the details represent important facets of configuration or that certain details of configuration are not worth trading off for improved functionality.

              Thanks Joe,

              I don't think this is what I see on the Long Island Corvette site. It says it has a fiber gasket. Maybe you could check it out at www.licorvette.com. Section: 05 Part number: 06A. There is some detail and pics at this address (hopefully it works for you)

                It looks pretty good and for 26 bucks I don't think you can go wrong.
