Don't know about any 5/8" hole? But the 5/16' hole in the hood support like the one in this picture with the "Do not remove before flight"
    pin in it.
I may be wrong but I would think it was put there for safety reason's. Like maybe it wouldn't fall on this GREAT NCRS Judges head???

That's my guess. You'll never know when a sudden gust of wind turns your hood into a sail and then slams shut.

I've had the hood slam shut due to wind. I've even bumped the hood with my shoulder and it has fallen on me I"ve been using a bolt in that hole since!

As far as that judge in the photo.... Appears to be Dale Crosby, so in this particuliar case the pin isn't required because he is an old hard headed friend..... might mess up his hair tho

A clevis pin and a Jesus clip works perfect.

Stephen. You are correct on two counts, that is Dale and his hair never moved during the entire process of judging my car. He had no "deducts"

              ALL,

yepper, use the pin myself, and so does my friend - but what was actually put there during the car going down the line????? had to be a reason, correct?

This sounds like a question for John Hinckley.

I honestly don't recall, but I'm sure the plant used a pin or simple tool in that hole while the hood was open; floor chain conveyors (Hard Trim Line) and flat-top conveyors (Final Line and Final Trim Line) jerk or surge occasionally, and that could cause a Corvette hood to drop, posing a safety hazard. They used wooden sticks in the Paint Shop (before the hood support was installed).

I use the same thing shown in Bill's photo on my car when I'm working on it or showing it to avoid messing up my hair .
