Any ideas out there on how many '61 Corvettes are still out there in running condition? Also, how many are left with true original engines? If we started with 10,939...??

Re: How many are left??
I don't know, but have often wondered if a friend from long ago still has the 61 Corvette he bought in San Diego in 1969, his first Corvette. Tom Miller also had a Triumph motorcycle and at the time worked in the base hobby shop at Coronado, CA.- Top

Re: How many are left??
I know of no way to get a handle on this as US records are held on a State by State basis AND quite a few of our older classic cars have 'escaped' to collectors outside North America. Bottom line, any numbers you might happen to stumble across can only be described as an educated guess...- Top

Re: How many are left??
What an odd question. I'd be interested in how many complete, original, unrestored '56s with original 1x4 engines there are but even if I knew, I can't say that it would change anything for me personally.
Are you perhaps selling and simply want a benchmark number for your ad? If someone posts an educated guess, I'd be very interested in how they arived at a given estimate. Maybe we could apply mostly the same logic to other year C1s...- Top

Re: How many are left??
Peter..I was responding to the qty of original engines and you are taking us to judging. You will need to research your specific s/n for all of the answers. My radiator is the 1960 style which is painted. The main sheild is s.s.t. the verticals are repop's, the spark plug,s have some chrome peeling off. Someone else will have to discuss what is correct.- Top

Re: How many are left??
Peter, Just got home and here is the information from the judging manual.
Page #60 Ignition Shielding: All top shields are low grade magnetic stainless steel. Left vertical's are SST: (but) some early (mine) 1961's have been observed with chrome plated steel; right vertical and one piece horizontal spark plug shields are chrome plated (not stainless steel).
An additional note for you: "early" is generally referred to as before delivery of the aluminum radiators where GM was using up the 1960 style radiators; up to approximately s/n 1600.- Top

Re: How many are left??
i'd be interested too, but the numbers will never happen...i own 61, #10800, bought it from original owner in 1968, i was 17, and original motor was gone (over-heated it, blew it)...the rest of the car is reasonably original (paint, dash, gauges, trans, rear, hood, etc)...for my first vette i've had a lifetime of fun with it, would'nt trade for an "all original" ever...its all what you make of it...also, on e-bay today there is a 61, fawn-beige on fawn-beige with white coves, seller says its one of 358 made with that combination, is such data really available? with my serial # being 139 from the end of production, maybe i have the last one produced with above color combinations (now its worth more money, lol)... lifes to short, enjoy them all...- Top
