1962 oil cap for 340 hp

Hello, I thought i had the correct oil cap for my car, but it seems mine should be unvented. The one on the car came from a 409 2x4 intake. It has flash chrome, oil/oil, 3000 mile decal, is vented, and looks very original. It does not conform to the judging manual however, so i am asking if any one makes a correct one at this time. Thanks in advance for any help. This is my first post so i hope i did it correctly.

Wayne, All the repro catalogs have a pretty unvented AC/Oil Chrome or zincad cap depending on the month of our your engine. You will probably loose a point or so for judging though.
I once had a mint 340/360 HP chrome cap. Lent it to a buddy and he sold the car with it on.
His initials are JH aka BH.

I'm interested in this subject because I own a 1962 fuel injected car that I bought in 1974 that has a cad plated non-vented AC-OIL and two half moons. The problem is that my car originally had the California positive crankcase ventilation system, RPO 242, that replaces the draft tube. It seems to me that my engine should have been equipped with a vented cap, yet the AIM and 62 parts book don't list a vented cap for this application. My cap appears to be the 1552719 listed in the parts book, and there is a note that says "Vent holes can be added for normal road operation as required or painted cap 1552233 can be used for this application to control oil consumption." It reads as if there wasn't a service replacement for a vented cap for an application requiring a vent. That doesn't mean that an original application with PCV didn't have a vented cap, and the judging guide indicates that a vented cap may have used on my application.

A previous owner of my car added breathers to the original aluminum valve covers, perhaps to alleviate pressure problems caused by having a PCV and no vent.

If I could prove that my car could have possibly been originally built with a vented cap, I might be interested in a trade for a vented cap.

So, does anybody have any knowledge of the use of vented caps on 62 340HP and 360HP engines with RPO 242, and what those caps could have looked like?

Well, I just did a search and found information from Rev. Ernst indicating that RPO 242 cars did use a non-vented cap. Still an issue with cad vs. flash-chrome though. My car is VIN 6331 (Feb. 2 birthday) and has a cad cap. https://www.forums.ncrs.org/showthre...=9357#poststop I think I will keep the cap even though it is cad. I might want to buy a vented cap too, though.

        Bruce -

Just to clarify - "flash" chrome is just the chrome, and it's clear, used on polished stainless to protect it from oxidizing. Factory chrome on steel parts was conventional nickel, then chrome.
