Clem, to your comment about wage and the ability to buy a car, exactly correct, two historical points. Henry Ford and the Model T, $250 for the car and a $5 a day wage, who bought his cars?

On the flip side Ford forgot that, down in Argentina in the late 90's Ford had a 40% market share. Problem? Avg wage was $7500 a year, and the cars cost $25000 for an Escort. Employees? Bussed in, we watches sales plummet to less that 18% MS in less than a year when Fiat, as well as others introduced $7000 cars.

Looks like more of GM might be Chinese owned.

This is Shanghai Automotive, China's largest automaker. As you may remember, the Chinese auto manufacturer Geely bought Volvo from Ford earlier this year.

Re: Another GM Unit Is Gone

I know that you might consider this sour grapes but I just have to make the following comments:

I recently purchased a new Buick Enclave. I continue to purchase new GM vehicles and particularly a Buick brand because Dick Garber (owner of Garber Buick here in Saginaw) is a great civic leader here in Saginaw. Also, I considered that components manufactured by Saginaw/Nexteer assist in keeping jobs in the Saginaw area.

After owning the Enclave for a few weeks imagine my surprise when I found out from my engineering friends (who are still employed at Nexteer) that there was absolutely no Saginaw content in that GM vehicle. No rack & pinion gears, no pumps, no hoses, no intermediate steering shafts, no driveaxles, no steering columns, or any other components.) I further found out that there is no longer any real Saginaw content on any GM passenger cars. (Thank goodness for GM trucks where Saginaw content remains very robust.)

In the last two months, my Enclave had to have its rack and pinion gear replaced. (I looked at the gear at the dealership, it definitely wasn’t a Saginaw part.) My wife’s Cobalt just received a campaign notice that her electric power steering column (along with 1.3 million others) required a new electric motor. (I think that it is of Japanese heritage.) Just yesterday GM announced a steering problem on Cadillac SRXs. (Manufacturer unknown.) BTW, I think that I can hear my non-Saginaw power steering pump making moaning sounds under the hood.

I guess you that you get what you pay for.

              Sorry for the rant.
              Jim

Tracy, you're right! The bottom part of Dick's original post is my post #11. Apparently when they brought the thread back a frankenstein was created.

I couldn't find this thread again last night. But here it is back again this morning. Maybe when someone is posting to it, it goes into hibernation and is not available. Or somebody is playing with our minds!
