    Re: Rust removal products

I decided to try Evapo-Rust and this stuff is great. $19.95/gal. at Tractor Supply. Thanks for all of the suggestions.

I use Evapo-Rust also. Buy it from Tractor Supply too. Evapo-Rust is very mild. No odor, non caustic on the hands, and will not attack other metals or plastic. I make trays by cutting off the bottom 3 or 4 inches of 1/2 and 1 gallon plastic milk cartons. When they get dirty I throw them out and start with a fresh one. I let most stuff brew overnight.
I also use Naval Jelly, but that stuff is caustic (wear gloves) and cannot be used on aluminum. -Dan-

would all these products work well on rusted bolts? I'm starting the restoration on my 1967 and all the original bolts are in good shape, just dirty & rusty.

I'm going to try the "home brew" remedies first and see what happens

I first clean all hardware in solvent to get the grime off. Then I wire wheel them to get the heavy rust and remaining crud off. Then chase the threads with a die. Then they go into the brew for an overnight soak. My car is a driver, so I clear coat them. If you are restoring, then they need to be blasted and plated. And heat treat to deal with the hydrogen embrittlement. -Dan-

Ideally it would be a liquid that I can simply drop these parts into.
I don't care what others say but KROIL is the best. We use it at work on molds that have been heated time after time & then set out to rust. A few drops & wait 10 minuts & you can turn the bolt with a open end wrinch. I am not kidding.

                  John,
                  Do a search on it.
Main site is kanolabs.com but not much information.
Have not be able to find the ph on it, no spec sheets found at home site.

You can order it directly from Kano Labs, online or by phone. Most of us use it as a penetrating oil, which is is what it was designed for.
