    Joe Lucia or Jim Shea

Steering column hub numbers 3937896 ('69 std. w/o tele) and 3923697 ('68 tele according to the AIM), My parts book does not show the '68 tele hub number?---What are the differences; fit, finish, size, etc.?

I have a '68 tele column that is fitted with the 3937896 hub (works fine).

Do I need the 3923697? If so, where do I get one?
    Thanks,
    G.

There are lots of similarities and common parts between 1968 and 1969 Corvettes. However, steering columns are not one of them. Rather, and perhaps surprisingly, the 68 columns are very similar to 1967. The 1969 columns are mostly different than 1968 but very similar to 1970-76.

The steering column hub part numbers are as follows:

      1968 without tele-----GM #3923696

      1968 with tele---------GM #3923697

      1969 without tilt-tele--GM #3937896

      1969 with tilt-tele------GM #3949110

What are the differences between the 1968 and 1969 hub designs? That would be very difficult to describe adequately. Suffice to say that they are different.

Do you need a GM #3923697 for your 1968 tele column? Well, if the 3937896 works fine for you then I would suppose not. That fact surprises me but who am I to quarrel with success?

Re: Joe Lucia or Jim Shea

        John and Joe,
        Thank you for your responses.
Tom called me last night and provided the detailed information I was seeking.
As Joe said, difficult to put into words, but the two main differences are:
        1) inner center hub "hex" casting on the correct '68 piece, and:
        2) Different lower "lip" configuration between the '68 and '69. The '68 hub is designed to fit into the middle housing, while the '69 is designed to fit over the middle housing.
Tom went on to say that he has seen many '68 teles fitted with '69 std. hubs (and that it does work mechanically ---but does not work in appearance).
Tom also has the correct hub which I am purchasing.
        Thanks again,
        G
