    Windshield R&R

I noted some rust on the birdcage along the windshield pillars today. The windshield need to come out to fully address the rust. Is this something I should tackle myself or farm out to an auto glass shop? I don't want to damage the stainless moldings or break the windshield.

Once its out, I have to decide whether to replace the windshield. Mine is original and is starting to delaminate around the edges. There is also a "wiper track" worn by the drivers side wiper. I don't think the delaminations will be very visible with the interior moldings on.

If I have a shop do the R&R about what should it cost? Are the new windshields with date marking indistinguishable from the originals?

    Thanks

    Mike

Getting the windshield out without breaking it is not easy and probably impossible for an individual that don't have the tools. I would say even for the professional it is a small percentage. So, I would plan to replace that windshield.

I agree with Wayne. Even the windshield pros will only guarantee a 'best efforts' job on windshield removal...

I got my original out a few months ago with only a braided brass wire for windshield removal and a few small handtools, mostly to hold the windshield up off the frame as it came loose. I had a couple of big dual suction cups with handles as well, but never used them.

I took lots of time and did it carefully. But it was rather a tense few hours and unless your not up to some tension, let a pro do it.

Once it was free, I had help to move it off the car.

Sure felt good when I got it off in one piece. Putting it back should be exciting as well.

Mike if your Corvette is going to mostly used as a driver, a new windshield is nice to look thorugh. I have done what you are wanting to do with your Vette, good luck.

I do not care if the old windshield is broken or damaged. Mine is stone-pitted and wiper scratched (minor injuries). Can a competent shop put the new one in? Or should I just leave it alone.
