    Various finish questions

I have learned that there is a lot of debate on how certain parts are/were finished. I am looking for guidance on the following parts

Upper control arm ball joint rivets. I have two sets from two Corvette suppliers, one set is zinc plated and has slightly rounded heads. The other set has flat heads and is a darker plated finish (phosphorous?).

Metal underbody heat shields. The finish called out in the judging manual is gray phosphate. The repro ones I have are painted black and one Bloomington/NCRS judge told me they should be dipped in chasis black.

The repro splash shields that go in front of the footwells are made from a rigid PVC material. My recollection is that the originals on the 69 I owned 20 yrs ago were more flexible.

What finish should the brackets that attach the side lights to the body from the inside be? Natural? Zinc?

Platers around here do "batches" It costs me $60 per batch (up to 100lb) per process. I would like to batch things as much as possible. Any guidance is appreciated.

    Mike

The metal underbody heat shields should be "Parkerized" with manganese phosphate. The color is gray. I had Dave Walters send mine out to California for replating.

I still have my original splash shields, very yellowed and stained, and they are of a thinner material than the pure white repros.

Are the smaller brackets that the heat shields attach to also the gray phosphate? I am going to have a batch done. The parts I can think of that are gray phosphate are the heat shields, seat tracks and the latches for the hood, are there any other parts that you can think of? Thanks

I have seen the under body heat Shields finished both in a black phosphate and semi-gloss black paint. My 69 shields are semi-gloss black paint and have never lost points for that finish in the 3 times it has been judged.

On my 68 and 69 the side light brackets look to be plated with a black phosphate like finish.

          Hi John,
          You mentioned the seat tracks.
On my 71 just the base of the track (the part that bolts to the floor) had a dark phosphate finish. The 'slide' (that moves with the seat) appeares to be zinc or perhaps natural?
          Just a note to clarify.
          Regards,
          Alan

Note the date code on the end of the slide in the second picture. 288 0.
