Re: corvette bellhousing
Mike-------
The GM #3788421 bellhousing was used for all 1963 Corvettes with manual transmission.
The GM #3840383 and 3858403 are functionally identical bellhousings, both designed for 12-3/4" flywheel applications. The 3840383 was used for 1964 Corvettes and mat appear sporadically after that time. The 3858403 was used for 1965-68 Corvettes with small block, L-78, or L-88. It is possible that it might have been used on some 1964 Corvettes, too.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: corvette bellhousing
I'm not in my shop to verify this but I think they also have a different size hole for the input bearing flange. The newer housings had larger holes and the older transmissions would go in just fine, but didn't center because of the larger hole size. It's about 1/2'' in diameter.

Yes, the '421' bellhousing had a smaller bearing retainer hole and was unique to 1963. The '383' and '403' have the larger hole size as was used for most other applications for many years. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: corvette bellhousing
IF you have one of the one-year-only 1963 transmissions with the small-diameter front bearing retainer, you need the 421 bellhousing; that bellhousing won't work with a '64-up transmission with the larger-diameter retainer, which requires a 383 or 403 bellhousing.- Top

Re: corvette bellhousing
John and Joe are correct. The 421 housing is unique to 63, and only 63. Many folks think that some late production 63's were originally assembled with the 383 or 403 housings. It didn't happen.
The 421 was used exclusively right to the end of 63 production.
Imagine the confusion on the St Louis assy line if SOME engines arrived at the plant with 383 or 403 clutch housings!- Top
