    1957 Tachometer problem

The tachometer on my 57 stopped indicating. I took the cable off the drive unit and spun it. The needle in the display indicated RPMs. Any suggestions on what to troubleshoot next? I have not been able to find anything in my shop manual related to the drive unit on the generator.
