    58 Hood paint

What kind of blackout paint to do touch up work on the smooth areas of the hood, seems I tried a Krylon flat and it rippled and had to sand it off, is it a paint for plastic or such only? Thanks,Brad.

    Brad:

Black out paint should be Krylon 1613. Make sure the surface is clean and make sure you have Krylon 1613 not Krylon 51613. Read my article in the Fall 2009 Restorer.

Why does the article say only one coat, it is going over another coat of whatever was put on before? does it wrinkle up over other coats and have to be sanded?. or maybe a light sanding between coats will keep it smooth? Thanks, Brad.

        Brad,
I would not recommending sanding the bottom of the hood as it changes the surface finish. I would gently wipe with a little lacquer thinner to remove sprayed on paint. Before doing that wash with water and detergent.
As far as the paint wrinkling goes, even a compatible paint will sometimes wrinkle if sprayed on in a heavy coat. Whatever you use just lightly dust it on let it dry some then dust on more paint until the desired coverage is acheived.

I agree with Bruce. Clean it, wipe it down and apply Krylon 1613. You can spray it or spray some in a small cup and brush it on. The brush works very well if it is a chip. You can "re-coat" the 1613 as many times as you want even after it has dried. With the 51613 you find at the "big box" stores it is a home owner one shot formula not made to re coat.

The color and brand I tried at first was Krylon flat, thats all I could find at first, it had the 5 in front of the other no, it wrinkled in some spots, went down and got the Krylon Satin for plastics, completely diff. no., it worked perfectly and matched the overall sheen. 1613 was no where to be found. Thanks again, Brad.
