    1963 Muncie Transmission

I am looking to replace the 64 Muncie with a correctly dated 1963 Muncie transmission for my May 63 car. I have located a 63 correctly dated main case and wanted to know if the guts of the 64 Muncie would fit in the 63 main case. In addition did the Muncie use the 421 bell housing with the small retainer or did it use the 403 bellhousing with the larger retainer?

Bob, it was the 421 as far as I know for all of 63 production. I would assume the guts are interchangeable, I'm sure others will comment.

      Bob,

I believe the front bearing retainer for all 1963 is the small one with 421 bellhousing bot Muncie and Borg Warner.

Someone will correct me if I am wrong but the difference between the 63 and 64 muncie is the course splined mainshaft and the 63 only yoke. Later Muncie used a fine spline mainshaft and thus no more twisting along with a fine spline yoke.

One more difference: the '63 mainshaft was a one-year only, because of the 1st gear not having a bearing-sleeve [excessive wear gear-to-shaft was encountered].

That said, I believe the entire "guts" from a '64 will transfer to the '63 case, although I'm not 100% sure about the front bearing (input main drive gear) given the different size of the bearing retainer.

          1963 Muncie used a 3831731 tail housing...

1963 T-10 used a 16 spline main shaft, but Muncies had a 27 spline main shaft...

You should be able to take your complete main shaft assembly(input gear, all the speed gears, to the end of the main shaft) as a unit and install into your 704 main case, but you will have to use a 207 bearing and small bearing retainer...

          Hope this helps... Crash

            FINALLY, the exactly correct reply.
BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUT, for those who have a 403 style bell housing (big hole for the front bearing retainer), or for those who WANT to use a 403 style bell housing (for whatever reason), there IS an option. In 1963, on the full size 409 cars, the Muncie got a DIFFERENT front bearing retainer that was the same retainer (for a bell housing with a big hole) as used on earlier 3spds. Part (and casting) number 3741458.
