What's up with fixation on "NOS Sound"

... and how do you measure this parameter objectively ? One example is C2 side exhaust, with eBay sellers claiming NOS sound ..... approved by Bloomington judges, etc. Here's a link to current eBay auction

Other sounds I can think of are horn notes, clatter of solid lifters, but exhaust tone ? What next ? ... scent of leather ?

Marketing BS for sure. Believe it or not, some people get sucked in by hype like this.

I hope it doesn't wind up with a legal battle such as the one Harley Davidson waged fifteen years back or so...

Good carburetion is fuelish hot air . . .

Well, for what it is worth, I saw points lost at the Des Moines Regional in the Ops section for 67 big blocks that had the wrong sound on the side pipes....

That's probably what the seller is trying to point out, that the reproduction side exhaust mufflers do not sound like the originals

I beg to disagree. Repro side pipes do not sound like original; in fact, much difference in noise and tone. Listen to the two types side by side, and you'll immediately hear the difference.

              Is sound a Line item?

Yup, item #19. Exhaust sound, leaks, smoke.

A valid question, artfully phrased by Mr. Midkiff - ESPECIALLY when the "call" is being made by a judge who is not old enough to have ever heard an original set of side pipes when they were new..........

Points aside, I for one would someday like to relive exactly what my '56 sounded like from the factory. To act as a sort of time machine. To me that is half the attraction of these cars, to really experience what it was like driving them when they were new.

When the time comes down the road for me to purchase replacement mufflers and exhaust, I will specifically be looking for the ones that are marketed as reproducing the original sound, in addition to be correct in every other way. Otherwise I will just buy NOS.

I sometimes do Ops judging at chapter meets and I am only 25. I never heard original exhaust on any mid year. How am I suppose to know the difference. should there be a judging school with recordings of exhaust so we can learn

Keith, Allow me to politely suggest you travel to a National Convention and hang around the Bowtie Judging area especially around the lift. Listen to the judges comments and you will soon learn which cars have original exhaust.

At some National Convention I have had some original exhaust Corvettes in my Advanced Judging Seminar -- at some Regionals also, but the National is a more fertile listening ground.

I don't care how old you are, and even though you're still a puppy, with a membership number of 14640, you should know a whole lot more than that!

That is one thing I would love to do. and for other members questioning my number I am using my fathers NCRS number in order to use this site to learn. I know I need to join and get my own number but I still live at home and I see no need to get duplicates of the drive line.

An interesting observation, Terry - especially from those of us who have said for TEN YEARS that all Flight judges be REQUIRED to attend Bowtie Judging as OBSERVERS so that they could TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN REAL & REPRO PARTS. Obviously worth only a rejection without comment and so now we have the "exhaust tone" experts; a previous section was the "oil pressure" experts; there is a Service News that advises that Hipo midyear oil pressure readings of 80+ pounds are normal - now, aint that a kick in the a__ for the experts.........
