    66 Holly Carb dating

I'm looking at buying a Holley carb for my 66 327/300. It is a List 3367 with a date code of 3465. I understand this uses a Julian calendar dating scheme. The JG does not seem to allow for use of the Julian calendar, but Allen Colvins "Corvette by the Numbers" explains that both the 3 digit system described in the JG and the Julian system were used until 1972 when only the Julian calendar was applied. Would a carb with the 4 digit date be considered correct for judging purposes or is this a service replacement?

I can't tell you about mid-years -- but I can tell you that for 1968-1972 (the only factory Holley equipped C3 Corvettes) the Julian dating system WILL receive a date deduction -- in spite of what Alan Colvin says. I would expect the same for mid-years, but I don't know that for a fact. There are lots of people here who do know though, so hang on.

I would expect to see a three digit date code on an original 1966 Holley carb (YEAR/MONTH/WEEK OF MONTH).

One with a four digit code would be judged as a service replacement. Deduction(s) would be for the date and any other minor changes/deviations from known original (ie. fuel bowl screw heads, fuel bowl configuration, other stampings and codes, etc, etc)

Not the first error in Colvin's book...

            John -

If you'll re-read that sentence on page 183, it says "Holley used both these systems of dating but only used the four-digit code after the 1972 model year". The two dating charts on page 184 are separated, with the 1963-1972 chart showing three digits, and the 1972-1975 chart showing four digits.

I obviously misinterpreted this. Thanks for pointing it out.
