Something ain't right. There should be clearance there. Do you have OEM springs or replacements? Are you sure the spring is seated in the upper pocket?

Well, that's the first thing that ran through my mind. I have no idea if the springs are original or aftermarket. The spring is in the proper seating position at the bottom, not completely sure about the top. I felt around the top the best I could without breaking the a-arms loose and dropping the spring. I would be curious to know how much clearance there is on someone elses 65. The point of contact was at the back side of the spring, toward the firewall.
I checked the passenger side and at the same place where the spring was rubbing on the driver side, there is about a 1/2" of clearance.
Who knows, there is no evidence of a hit, all the body panels appear to be original with factory bonding seams on the front end.
But I agree with you, there has to be some reason the spring was rubbing the frame, I just don't know why???

Use an inspection mirror and a flashlight to view up into the upper spring pocket and see if the spring is ascew.

            John -

The spring is to be seated at the TOP end, 3/8" from the formed stop in the upper seat in the frame, as shown in the Assembly Manual. The hole in the recess in the lower control arm is for water drainage.

              John,
Hi, this may be a stupid question, but here goes. If an OEM spring is in position so the drain hole in the lower A-Frame is just visible, would that indicate that the the top coil was positioned in teh seat correctly?

              Thanks,
              George

                George -

Could be, but not necessarily - there was a fair amount of variation in the relative locations of the coil ends to each other as a result of the wire cutoff length and the coiling operation.

I'll do some further investigating at a later time. I had rotator cuff surgery friday morning and as you can well imagine, I'm not in a position to do anything but sit and read and goof around on the computer. I'll get the car out in a month or so to see if I got the squeak fixed or not, then just go from there. Thx guys!!
