    Heater Box Gaskets

    Hi guys,

I recently pulled out my heater box assembly from my 67 non-AC L-79 and replaced the heater core. I ordered up a new gasket set as well and I am ready to start putting it all back together. My trouble is I do not have a clear diagram that show exactly how the gaskets are supposed to be placed. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I just replaced what turned out to be the original heater core. Not too bad on a non A/C car except for prying the firewall cover off.

I don't know if you have it apart yet but I was able to use a putty knife to finally break it free.

I do have my unit out as well. I used a putty knife as well and it all came out pretty easy. That stuff had been apart before as the core wasn't even connected! no straps! Also, my inside heater box was not even mated up with the top defroster duct. I am sooooo glad I pulled it all out to check it over. I pulled the motor and trans to do a major clean and paint so one thing leads to another )

Replaced the core in my 1965 non A/C car last month

Purchased a really nice core from Advance Auto Parts for $36.99 it is Advance P/N 398207 available in most local stores and on line

Not AC/Delco but a lot less $$$'s looks great and fit was perfect.

As this part is hidden IMO the aftermarket should not prsent any problems from a judging perspective.

Hi Carl, I agree as I also bought an after market type core. Lucky for me that I don't really have thoughts of judging...

Earl, The dash mounted defroster duct is not supposed to be attached to the inner heater box assembly. Doing so creates a strange resonance.

I understand and thank you but mine had a 4 inch gap! Top bolt on the Heater Box was off as well... It was a mess but will be better tonight...

I replaced the core on my 63 back in about 03 - by myself. I mention that because all articles and instructions will tell you you need a helper when re-installing. I had the complete gasket kit, but all I used was the housing seal(s). The damper door seals looked good, and certainly too hard to change (riveted). When I re-installed, I found you need the inside housing held firmly on place while you fit the underhood housing, crushing the foam gasket enough to get the pal nuts started (that's where they say that you need a helper - wife or significant other). I did it myself using a roll of duct tape jamed between the inner housing and the cross member (on which your serial tag is attached). Worked like a champ.

Makes complete sense to me Stu. I'll probably get my 10 year old son to help as he really likes working on the 67 with me...

At least he would be small enough and flexible enough to get near it while you show him

                        On a somewhat related note....
Is there some sort of black dye available for the resin/hardener for doing fiberglass repair for missing chunks of a spare outer box?
