    1978 gas cap

    Hello Everyone,

Does anyone know where I might get my hands on a "correct" gas cap for a 78 car? I believe the one I'm looking for is gold-tinted metal with "NDH" and "559346" etched on the top of the cap. I think this same cap was also used on the 79 cars as well. Thanks in advance, Jim......."Go Steelers"

    Jim,
If your concern is judging, I think -- but you better check with someone who knows for sure -- that there is a date code on the bottom of those caps. I know it is on some of the "newer" C3s, but I am not sure what years.

If someone else doesn't respond about the date code, I'll drop the dime to find out for sure. Or I will ask while I am in Florida. All the parties concerned will be there.
    Terry

      Hey James

We had a rather exhaustive discussion on the 559346 about a year ago but you're correct. The date code is not judged but the gold iridite plating is. I've looked for several years while attending Carlisle but have only came across two both of which the plating is pretty much gone. I've attached the link below that shows and explains how to determine the date code. Just scroll down until you get to the relevant discussion. Go Bears...

        Re: 1978 gas cap/floor mats/radio not desired

Hey Terry and Tom....thanks for the replies. I was finally able to locate the correct Gas cap on Friday from Stoudt Corvette in Reading, Pennsylvania. As a matter of fact, they had two! The one they have left is supposedly in very nice shape with most of the gold plating intact. They are asking $75.00 for it if your interested.

On a side note, three questions....First, can you guys tell me what kind of floor mats originally came with the 1978 Silver Anniversary cars? Second....can you replace the fuel filler neck boot simply by sliding it down over the filler neck itself? Three....my car was a "radio not desired" car....is there a "block-off" plate available in reproduction that is acceptable?

By-the-way....I do have the assembly maual, and I'm still waiting for my 78-79 judging book to arrive. Thanks, JIm

How did you track them down? Do you have contact information?

Same as the interior color...nothing special

Second....can you replace the fuel filler neck boot simply by sliding it down over the filler neck itself?
Yes, but you want to ease it up so it doesn't catch or tear on the lip of the neck.

A radio delete...huh? I've seen them on ebay and may even have a photo of one. Problem is tracking it down. I would imagaine if they are reproduced, than the specs used may be a generic for the 70 model years. Not that many in a given model year to warrant correct reproduction.

            Re: 1978 gas cap

Hey Tom...I was trying to find the cap the easy way, but finally just started calling some of the larger Corvette shops that have associated parts departments. I finally found the two at Stoudt Corvette in Reading, Pa. They have one more nice one on hand for $75.00. Their parts department number is (610)-374-4856 and their web address is stoudtcorvette.com. Thanks for your response to my questions, Best regards, Jim
