I see for my 65 small block their are a number of aftermarket kits available but which ones if any come back to use a PF-25 or 35 Filter instead of PF-1 etc,. Is one better than the other? Any suggestions would be appreciated. I am looking at the LICS one but haven`t called to see what filter it uses. Thanks, Mike
      Oh Boy-
I remember those canister type filters on a lotta Chevy's back in the day when I was an OIL-LUBE-FILTER guy at the local Tire Center here in N. IL. back in the 50's, 60's & 70's. Those things were a NIGHTMARE to say the least! What do you want; Originality or CONVIENANCE? I suspect convienance from reading your post. Go with the spin-on, you will not be disappointned. Back then they did not have the technology that we have now.

Depends what kit was installed - some retain the original bypass valve, and some don't. If your kit doesn't have it, you'll need one (photo below).
        Curiously, I always wondered.......Maybe a stupid/useless question.

Does it matter which way the Bypass Valve assembly for the normal canister filter gets mounted? I have never seen a installation procedure which states which way it gets mounted, the valve port side inward or outward. Maybe it does not matter?

I just did a 427 build and saw a engineering drawing in my "How to Build Big Block Chevy Engines" (purchased from the NCRS Store of course), and it showed it facing inward(towards crankshaft).

If there are 2 ways of doing something I quite often get it wrong the first time. As usual, in my case I mounted it wrong the first time, then saw the drawing by chance one day then reversed it.

          Mike -

The only Assembly Manual illustration that calls for that gasket is the 1967 version, which I think was done in error; it wasn't shown in any other model year.

I have used a Cal Custom #6515 spin-on adapter on my 67-327 base engine since 1983 with no problems. It uses a Fram PH-8, AC PF-2 oil filter.

I changed to it because the original canister was dripping from the center bolt and I couldn't figure out how to stop it from leaking.

I still manage to make a mess changing the oil no matter what I do.

I also made a gasket for my 67 when I had the relief valve assembly off the engine this past fall. I wonder if the 68 up cars had them or is that when the spin on filters started.

                Tim -

The block machining for the valve changed for '68 when they went to the spin-on filter, and so did the valve; I think these numbers are fairly close:

                1963-1967 (canister) valve - 5573837 ('56-'67 Service valve was 5573979)

                1968 spin-on valve - 3916328 (from Camaro AIM)

                1969 spin-on valve - 3952301 (from Camaro AIM)
