I'm so confused (mostly by Ebay cars)

An earlier posting got me looking at 62s on Ebay and now I'm thoroughly confused about how to identify engines. It was my belief that the 250 and 300 HP engines had the oil input point to the left while the 340 and 360 HP engines had it pointing to the right. I thought that the 250 and 300 HP engines had painted valve covers while the 340 and 360 HP engines had the finned aluminum valve covers. Am I correct? If so how do you distinguish between a 250 and a 300 HP engine? In any case I'm certain that some of the postings on Ebay are definitely incorrect (and I though all posting there were 100% accurate).

You have the oil fill locations by HP correct....lots and lots of the General's stamped steel valve covers were replaced by finned aluminum covers by owners to dress up the engine bay

One big differance is that the 250 HP motor uses the WCFB carburator and the 300 HP engine uses an AFB. Both are on painted cast iron manifolds though. Rich

The head identification between the 250 and 300 HP is one way.

Manual cars engine pad stampings: RC = 250, RD = 300
          AT's: SC = 250, SD = 300
