    C1 leaf springs

After reading the many posts here about re-arching leaf springs, I sent the springs off of my '62 to Eaton Detroit Spring. They called this morning to tell me that my springs brinnell test "soft" and that they were pitted. He said that he could "cold bend" them or he would run them through the furnace if that is what I wanted. He did not know how long they would last. I asked him how my springs compared to other solid axle Corvette springs that they have done. He said that "they all are soft, but mine are softer than most and pitted." My car lived in San Diego for it's whole life. The springs didn't look excessively bad to me (see photo). They are just worn out.
Has anyone here had a similar experience? If you had your springs done, how are they holding up? I am leaning toward having them done properly in the furnace. But I don't need to throw money away. I don't plan to have the car judged, but I do plan to drive it. Thanks.

I had mine re-arched by heating at a spring shop back in '86. Not fair to say how they held up as the car only has about 2500 miles on it since then, but it sure sits nice.

Speaking of San Diego, last C1 springs I had done was by a shop down there. That was 20 years ago and don' t know if they are still there.

After a long conversation with Eaton Detroit spring today. They told me that my springs were too soft to run through the furnace. The furnace operator feared that they would burn up. He recommended that we cold bend them and shot peen them. So I am going with their recommendation. I'll let you know how they turn out. This is definetly a learning experience.

          Rex,

You are right, from your picture your springs do not look anywhere as bad as mine as far as reverse curving.

Good to read this thread for the extra info, thanks!

I plan on sending my original '56 springs off to them this summer...
