    Early or late?

Verifying intake manifold casting and date codes for my '68 427 L68. Unfortunately, the date code is on the underneath. Casting # (3937795)from documentation indicates it was used on late 427/400s. Is March 14 (vin 413723) considered "late"? What is cutoff point between early and late? According to documentation, my block casting # (3916321) is considered "early", block date code is L87 (Dec 7 '67).

    Thanks!

    Re: Early or late?

Block casting date is not a marker for early/late for the assembled engine. A better reference would be the engine ID stamp indicating when the engine assembly was completed. Early and Late are generally an indication that a firm date is not known and are provided as a general guide, but the reference would still come from the engine assembly code on the front of the block.

Thanks for reply Bill. Unfortunately, I did a poor job of explaining my delemma.

I'm curious of intake cast # 3937795 matches to my car assemble date of Mar 14 '68? Restoration documentation I'm using indicates intake cast # 3937795 is for late '68 427/400s. Want to be sure that my car assembly date is not considered too early to have this intake installed on it.

This would all be moot if I had not spaced out getting the date code off the bottom of the intake.....

Pete, my January 22 built has intake 3919850. I've been told, mine is not early but closer to midrange which is VIN# 9643
