Re: Help me ID the bolts

My 70 with all four bolts being 1" is a July build. Not sure of the day off the top of my head but remember it being in the last 2 weeks of the build year.

I just went and checked my buddys late 69 about 2 months before my 70 and the front lower bolt on both sides is shorter than the other three.

Re: Help me ID the bolts

        Hi Keith,
The note says frt (front) hole, and L288 is the page in the 71 AIM.
What I'm going to post is based on observation of one car; so be ready to disregard it.
I found the different length bolts on the EXTENSION as I posted. BUT... I also found different length bolts for the bracket for the SWAY BAR bushing/mount (the AIM calls for 4 of the same length). The front hole of the bracket is right below that front extension bolt .
IF the longer SWAY BAR bolt was used in the FRONT hole of the bracket, AND the longer EXTENSION bolt was used in the FRONT hole of the extension, THEY HIT EACH OTHER before you can tighten them to specs.
When I started taking my car apart I began keeping track of what bolt came out of what hole... this was one of the few times it mattered.
        Regards,
        Alan

The apparent inconsistencies in the cars and even the AIMs is driving me nuts. Does your 70 AIM 14A2 look like this?...only three bolts are illustrated, two Item 9, one Item 12.

My AIM depicts the same. However, if based upon what was/is existing on my July built 70, there should be 2 each #12 bolts attaching part #7 and 2 each #9 bolts attaching part #10.

Re: Help me ID the bolts

Here are my other bolts I found at work today. Like my pic above It shows the two sizes for the ones that get the nut. 1: in front hole and 1.5" in the rear. Even though the AIM shows the same part no. for the 1.5 with seperate nut and the 1.5s for the weld nuts. Mine had different heads. And the one for the weld nuts had a unthreaded section under the head about 3/16". And the 1" had a third head. Maybe the 1.5s were put in at different stations since the long bracket couldn't go on till after body drop. That would explain the different head type.

Re: Help me ID the bolts

Interesting. For my late 70 (July 30), headstamps on my 1" bolts are WB w/three equally spaced lines (Grade 5) in a depression; the WB is stylized with the back of the B formed by the right hand leg of the W. The 1 1/2" bolts have M w/three equally spaced radial lines, a common headstamp with A in the front end area.

Summarizing, we have three different configurations observed:

                (1) All four bolts 1" length
                (2) Two 1" bolts, two 1 1/2" bolts
                (3) One 1" bolt, three 1 1/2" bolts

I'm beginning to think there were no set rules...in spite of the AIM, or maybe because of it, the assembly line guys apparently grabbed whatever was handy.
