My 4-speed SWC recently developed a distinctive "thunk" which sounds and feels just like broken motor mount accept it seems to be coming from the rear end. This happens every time I abruptly let off of the gas pedal. If I ease off the gas or simultaneously apply the clutch it doesn't "thunk." I'm putting it on the lift this weekend, where should I start?

Re: 1963 SWC Rear Noise
Nathan, Also look at the Bolts holding the front bracket to the rear end housing itself. I have seen these bolts loosten over time and create oval holes. It makes a terrible banging noise when you get on and off the accelerator. I have also seen these brackets crack!
Good Luck!- Top

Re: 1963 SWC Rear Noise
Had the same issue on my 63 SWC and eventually found that someone had wedged a small wooden block between the top of the diff pumpkin and the fiberglass floor/tunnel. Must have had a purpose but I don't know what it was. Some midyears have a problem with sagging floors related to loosening rivets in the support behind the seats. I had no sag when I removed the wood block, but the clunk went away!
Just goes to show you that on 47 year old cars there are lots of possible explanations for things like this.
Prior to finding the wood block I refreshed my snubber and replaced my diff fluid/added fresh posi lube with no improvement.- Top
