Interior paint for metal, plastic and vinyl

I have read through the archives and am still not clear on whether I can use the same "vinyl" paint on metal (steering colum), plastic (kick panels) and vinyl (faded dash). Do I use a different primer? Or different paints? Will the gloss level be correct for all these applications with one paint?

If you are using Lacquer you can use the same paint for all substrates.
I would use Acetone on all the vinly or plastic parts as a prep wipe.

I was wondering what interior paint/die you're using. Also, if the interior pieces (dash, pillars, etc.) have already been painted/died should they be stripped before repainting?

Hi Mike,
On my 71 I used Krylon #1613 for the gauge bezels, console trim plate and door trim bezels. I found it very easy to work with.
I didn't use any primer because I found that when I used primer the finished paint had too thick a look compared to the original.
Since my interior is black I used it on the steering column and hard plastic trim too. I don't have any experience using it on soft trim.
Although I like Krylon #1613, people speak highly of the SEM brand and John Deere Blitz paints too.

Krylon #1613

I just called a few automotive stores in my area to see if I could purchase this paint,Krylon #1613 . They told me that this was a good number in the data base, BUT, thy could not get this paint anymore. The parts guy told me no where in the nation did it exist anymore. Dan Termeer

Great results and thanks for the pictures of your painting of the console bezel. I was wondering if you would share how you were able to prep and paint the area where it says Corvette near the wiper switch? Mine needs paint refreshing but concerned about the letters.

Dan -

The good old Krylon #1613 Semi-Flat we've used for years is no longer carried in retail channels, and its replacement isn't even close to semi-flat. However, good old #1613 still exists, but only in their commercial/industrial channel, as a "5-Ball" product; most industrial houses like Grainger's, McMaster-Carr, etc. carry it.

SEM Trim Black #39143 provides the same semi-flat finish, is more durable and scratch-resistant, and sprays out much better.

5-ball Krylon is now considered an industrial coating and is supposed to be available through industrial coating outlets.

SEM automotive interior dye will cover metal, vinyl, leather, hard plastic and carpet - they say. I've never used SEM on carpet, but had no problems with it on all of the other surfaces. Cleanliness is the key. Anything to be covered with SEM has to be squeaky clean.

Terry,

For the chrome letters and trim: use the blue painters masking tape and a set of X-Acto knives. You can cut thin strips with the knives and cover the letters or a little wider pieces and then trim the edges off while in place with knives. Even when you cut strips and cover, you will likely need to trims off some edges or overlaps from the tape. Be careful on the t******* in-place that you don't cut the existing plastic and "cut to fit" works the best. Prep is the key and will take 10X the time of the 2 or 3 spray coats you apply. Once the tape is in place and the adjacent areas are blocked from over spray, you spray the whole piece. You can also paint with parts off the car if you are disassembling. Once the paint dries; use the pointed tip of the X-Acto knife to peel up a corner of the tape and then peel the tape off. You may loose a little color around the tape edges and you will need to touch those up with a very small brush or Q-tip.

Have fun and enjoy. When you are done you will see that you just put $150 in labor on a $12 part.

This may sound 'primitive' but when I touched up mine a few years ago, I sprayed it then carefully used a acetone soaked q-tip to take paint off raised letters and such. Is there a good reason not to do this? Also as stated above, the krylon isn't super scratch resistant.
