    66 fan shroud installation 327, 350hsp

Never have attempted to install a fan shroud. Today I tried for the first time. Struggled a lot. Can anyone tell me the sequence to install. Does the core support have to be removed in order to install the shroud. We had a tough time getting the fan shroud to clear the A arms with the core support installed. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

    John,

Do you have the fan blade & clutch off?

If you have the front end of the motor pulled back to the pulley, I find, doing this alone, that it is easier to drop these in radiator and shroud together, assemble the rad, hoses then bolt the shroud back up followed by the fan blade & clutch. I can't imagine what he issue could be unless you have AC or other???

Never had a real struggle and the rad support never gets touched, that sets up all your front end/ hood dimensions.

Ron, yes took the fan/clutch/pulley off and move the alt. Tried to insert the shroud after that and could not get the lower shroud past the forward part of the A arms. Thought we tried every angle to get it past the A arms, but just could not manage. Clearly we are doing something wrong or we have the wrong shroud...

I have a 100% intact 66-7 original shroud that was just taken off a 327 I can take a picture of later on Friday for comparison, I would find it odd to have the wrong shroud. A picture of the front end area would help...

Did this part come off the car?

Was the car hit in the front end perhaps?

          John,
I'm with Ron on his advice, After struggling for quite a while I came up with the idea of assembling them and then installing like Ron it it just slipped right in.

Ron, when I purchased the car the shroud was missing. Bought one at Carlise to install. The car is no-hit. Absolutely perfect.

Fundamentally the attachment points from BB to SB are exactly the same and a BB occupies a much larger space which would mean that if any of these two were to be a problem to install the BB would be the bear and it is not.

Given you mentioned the cars condition and the expected pieces are out of the way, shroud becomes suspect. Is it used original, NOS, or repro?

Send me a picture of the shroud you bought, I have an exact near perfect original SB shroud we can get a pic of and compare to (its only missing one of the original hard to find clips).

Ron, the part # that I see on it is 3886885 left, 3886886 right, see the General Tire logo in several places, also see the #88268 near the hole in the upper mounting area. I think this is correct??

John I have a 1970 with A/C and large radiator which has a large shroud. I learned a very very long time ago the easiest way for me to remove my radiator shroud to easily remove the radiator without removing the hood or even turning a bolt on the radiator support.
Placing a floor jack under the passenger side lower control arm enough to support the weight placed on the ground contact with the front tire. This will remove the tension on the upper control arm. Loosen the two control arm nuts and remove the alignment shims and tape them together and mark to replace same removed location.
Remove the nuts and the control arm will have relatively free movement to be placed away from the radiator.
Always remove the fan and fan clutch as well.
This works for me. I also knock the bolts out of the frame which have a sereated edge to retain them.

                    John,

Get us a a picture of your engine bay, as Peter & I have said, a mid year, should be a drop in proposal, no need to be pulling apart chassis components.

Also... GT was not on the originals...

Just took out the radiator and shroud from my 67 327/350. It was really tight by the A arms for me too, and took a lot of work. Didn't take brace or A arms parts off. Will have to touch up arms tho.
Someone painted my shroud. Does anyone out there restore these?

They are supposed to have a coat of black.

Now I am confused. My 67 327 sb shroud looked like it was covered with black paint, but wouldn't come off with lacquer thinner. I used some paint remover, removed what looked like clear, and it took it down to rough grey fibers. The side flange says General Tire, GT, 3886886.

So, is this an original shroud? If not, maybe thats why it was so difficult to remove.

Was the coating a gelcoat? What should I do to make this look original?

66 was painted, not sure on 67. But the two 1967 shrouds that came out of original 67 cars did not have the GT logo on them nor the part number, jus the DS logo which is the original manufacturers logo.

Is the glass gray or black?

The part numbers it looks like were added into the tool for service shortly after the 67 Model year.

GT logos got added in later, GT was 70's or 80's thing, for sure early 80's.

John, the reason you are struggling might be if you have the car sitting on the wheels. When I have done these changes the car was on a lift enough to get under the car to do the lower brackets and the wheels were hanging.

It may be that wheels hanging moves the top A frame enough that these drop in pace with no appreciable difficulty.

In both these cases - pics - sure would help.
