    63 Exhaust Front Heat Shields

There was a detailed discussion March 2006 about shields however all pictures have been deleted.

    Thanks

Hey Jeff !! I had one spare one on the workbench. I believe it is an original. You can see the measurement in my photo. About 15".

I don't know for sure. This one was a swap meet find from several years ago. It is the way I found it.

I don't see why it would have been painted. I know the mufflers got some black out but the front pipes were not painted.

            Shields were natural....no paint.

Thanks Tom. My right side looks identical to yours except someone cut off 11"-16" section with a hack saw. Now it makes sense. The left side is still 15" long.

              Thanks

I have two NOS heat shields that I bought back in the early 1980's before the reproductions made the scene.
The NOS 1963-195 shield (w/GM # 3828281 sticker) is painted black. The NOS 1965 shield (GM # 3864178) is not painted. My guess is that the production line heat shields were not painted. I have several other used original 1963-1967 heat shields in my collection that I found at swap meets and even a pair attached to an original pair of 1963 exhaust pipes (2"). I still have the pipes and the shields.

I also bought a pair of reproduction heat shields for my 63 split when they first were produced (1988 or 1989???) and it was very obvious that they were reproductions as the ribs appeared to be made by hand.

I have no idea what today's reproduction heat shields look like.

Can anyone post a picture of these heat shields installed on the car? I'm putting new ones on and wanted to know what they should look like. There are none on the car now.

                    Thanks

The 1963 Corvette AIM (Sect. 8, Sheet 6.00) shows the location of the heat shields on the exhaust pipes with a dimension of 17.25" from the end of the exhaust pipe.

                        Hi Dave

I see that dimension. But I have two different shields that came in the Paragon 297K set and I was curious on which piece goes on whci side of the car. Thanks, Jerry

Jerry, the shields have a bend that only lets them go one way, Look at the AIM should give you and idea.

he is right, the straight shield goes on the drivers side and the one with the bend goes to the right side. They usually are mounted with the shield facing the fiberglass.

C166 in Graphic drafting Aims. Or Section 8 sheet 6,.00 Exhaust sytem. Should answer alll of your questions except for finish which is bare.
You don't need any measurements for drivers side. See the pic. For once the aims is dead nuts and very clear.
As David said 17-1/4" from end of front exhaust pipe which is at the center crossmember. Meanwhile no one is going to measure to see if its that dimension. And one last thing. They are on their for decoration aren't they. Just sure don't shield any heat from the floor.
Some guys paint them cast blast in the old days. Guilty. JD

Bragging rights. I grabbed one of my aims from the shelve. Put it in front of monitor. Opened it up to the EXACT page Section 8 Sheet 6.00
Whew!!!! Need to go play the lottery.
