1969 427 Roadster eBay with smog question

    Gentleman,

Would a 390 HP Roadster have come with smog? I'm looking at purchasing a car and the seller says he's been told yes and no both, frankly I just don't know.

If anyone reading this watches eBay it is the Canadian Black over Gunmetal car, (any opinions are welcome!), I do know this is a pricey repalcement if missing though!

I'm assuming a Black over gunmetal with automatic would be a fairly rare and desireable car?

    Thanks,
    Dave

Every 69 Corvette had a smog system when it rolled out the back door for the transport from St. Louis.

I've never seen any compelling evidence to prove otherwise.

There are no 1969 Corvettes on ebay from Canada. The only black one is an L-89 from Tennessee. How about a little assist?

Confirming what Mark says, Dobbins' book (Fourth Edition) shows a picture of smog equipment installed on a 69 427/390 hp engine (page 91).

I tried to find evidence of the a.i.r. holes being plugged in the manifolds, but no photos showed that area clearly enough. Regardless, it looks like the car would have come with K-19 so that's a few thousand and several more thousand for the interior and paint. I wonder what his reserve was. I think 20k would have been a good price for the seller.

                Dave------

I agree with the others-----ALL 1969 Corvettes were originally equipped with AIR.

If the car has exhaust manifolds without plugged AIR fittings, that means that someone has changed the manifolds to the non-fitting style.

Also, if it's an L-36 (also applies to 300 hp and L-46), check the fuel line from the pump to the carb. Is it a factory-like fuel line with bends typical of pre-formed fuel lines or is an obvious field-fabricated line? If it's a factory-type line is it "hanging out there all by itself" well away from the block and cylinder heads (where the AIR pump and bracket previously resided)?

So far, I have NEVER seen a 1969 Q-Jet-equipped Corvette without AIR that had a factory-type fuel line designed for an installation without AIR. That's because no such fuel line ever existed. If there had been 1969 Corvettes built without AIR there would have been such a fuel line.

The Canadian car does have the plugs in the exhaust manifolds where the tubes ran.

                    Hey there Jim!

Well we solved the mystery on smog! Now we definitely know that it's a fixed expense that needs to be addressed, I'm glad it has the proper exhaust manifolds. I'll give you a call tomorrow.

                    Have a great evening!
