    Installing new convertible top

I've purchased a complete top kit and installation DVD from Al Knoch for my '64. After watching the DVD I have to admit that the prospect of my installing the top is causing me pause.

I'd like to hear from those of you, particularly from the Sarasota, FL area, who have successfully installed their own top.

As always, thanks for your interest and help.

the most difficult top to install is the 53-5, followed by the 56-60, followed by the 61-2. the midyear tops are a breeze to install compared to the c-1. although al's dvd could be better organized, i suspect most gear-heads can use the dvd and install the c-2 tops. mike

Having a new Al Knoch convertible top you could give them a call and see if you can get an appointment at the Corvette Expo show March 25-26, 2011 with Al Knoch's installers. Contact Al Knoch Interiors. Make sure you take your receipts to prove you bought the top from them.
Sarasota to the mountains of east TN would be a nice get away to a Corvette show driving a 1964 Corvette.

Forty years ago, when I was young and dumb, I bought a replacement top from Sears for my Dad's '63 and proceeded to install it. Took about a day, since I had no prior experience and had only the vague Sears instructions to follow.

It wasn't a bad job at all.

Unfortunately, I made a mistake and drew the vinyl too tight. It shrank and pulled loose. I ended up installing a 2nd top a couple of years later. That time it took only a few hours. That top lasted almost 15 years.

It's not a tough job. Really it isn't. If I, as an impatient youngster, could figure out how to do it, anybody can.

I've installed tops on a 66 Vette and a 56 T-Bird. Both looked better than my buddie's who had theirs done "professionally" by local shops. Just don't try to stretch the crap out of the top; just remove the wrinkles. Water and sun will take it from there.
