    Engine stamp pad opinion

Here is a hi res photo of my stamp pad. It's a L72 (427/425) car. All the codes make sense. As far as I know, the engine is original to the car. What do you guys think?

My opinion doesn't mean squat, because I know less than nothing, but I would be pretty comfortable with that pad. I like how the date stamp is tucked up under the plug and I like the extremely faint broach lines. Curious what the guys that know stuff say.

      Don,

Well maybe, but I sure like the way you think! Thanks for your opinion, I feel better already.

        Joe,

Maybe Bill Lacey will chime in here as he has a good collection of photo's showing stamp pads.

          Mike,

Thanks for the info. I know where to find him if he doesn't chime in!

The characters and placement of each stamp is completely typical of factory stamps. The grain is hard to see in the photo but looks good. There is nothing in this picture to indicate anything but a good original stamping.

Joe, if the grain were sharper it (the grain) would be questionable, iron ages too! Lookin' good, but tell me about that bolt into the water pump...no washer, original stud or is that a bolt head? What does the tip of it look like?

                    Ron,

Perhaps I should have given more background info. I am in the process of restoring the engine. I decided to really do my homework before going any further. I put the engine together "dry" - with no gaskets, just enough to slow down air infiltration and pest invasion. I am judging the engine myself. I want to have all the right parts ready when the time comes to put the engine together. In the process of judging it, I naturally came across the stamp pad judging section. So I posted the picture here. As far as the water pump goes, that is a bolt head you see. I have not gotten to that section in the TIM&JG yet, so I don't know if it's correct or not. From what you're saying, it sounds like it's not. Thanks for the tip, I will certainly look into it. I do know that the water pump should be painted Chevy orange.

Joe, in that position should be a stud, if you find it, I'd really like to see a picture of the end of that stud, I guarantee you won't find anything in the archives...

                            Yeah Jim,
this one gives me a warm and fuzzy too.
But as you know, I don't know anything.

                              Jim,

Thanks for posting. I assume that it is an example from the "good" camp. I talked with Mike Hanley at our St. Louis chapter meeting last night. He suggested that the broach marks would show better if I had shot the picture from directly above. Your example appears to be taken that way. Maybe I'll post another one just for grins.
