    '67 Front Clip Work

It has been a long time since I've worked on my '67 since I got fed up with it a few years ago after having bad repo panels and a front end blister and diverted my time to restoring a 1976 with my oldest son and currently rebuilding a 280z thats getting a turbo'd engine for my yonger son. This past week I was able to spend some time performing some prep work on my new Sermersheim front end before I bond it on. I still have to drill a hole in the header bar for the grill brace and some holes for the wire harness and hoses.

Thanks for posting Scott. My '67 has a poorly repaired front end as it was hit in it's earlily life. I had always thought it to be a nightmare to fix it, but as I wasn't aware of the clip made by Sermersheim I hope my nightmare is over

So far this clip is much better with regards to fit and assembly compared to brand X that blistered on me. The panels weren't installed straight and the lower valence had a bend in one end that I had to repair. So far so good on this one.

Thanks for the feedback Scott. "The panels weren't installed straight and the lower valence had a bend in one end that I had to repair." Is that the new or old clip you purchased?

No, the rework was required on the other clip, this one is very nice.

After grinding the bonding areas and removing any gobs of adhesive around the bonding areas, I slipped the new clip on last night and shimmed up the core support. I was pleasantly surprised on how well the door alignment and fit has been so far. I might even get it glued on this weekend.

Scott, how long did you have your Brand X clip on before it blistered? How bad was the blsitering? Any compensation from Brand X Mfg?? I have a Brand X front clip and both rr qtr panels on my 66 coupe and all are blistering. I even had my car painted twice, after the front clip blistered, I thought it was my fault for not doing gel coat right. Paint shop sanded to bare glass and sealed, blistered again 12 months later! It wasn't my fault...well I guess it was for buying the wrong panels! Very disturbing.

It's quite gut wrenching to see all your work go down the toilet. I had the recommended mils of gelcoat and sat the car in the sun for a week. Then the blisters started and a rear quarter started to drip black resin from a pin hole. I shoved the car in a corner for the last three years because I was so fed up with the experience.

                      Scott.......Nice!

What are you planning to use for adhesion? I recently put a nose on a '59 and used the 3M 8115 Automix panel adhesive. Long 4 hour work time and 24 hour cure time was a blessing.

Thanks Richard, I'll be using the 8115 as well.

                          Re: '67 Front Clip Work

Just a couple updates to my front clip. I glued it on two weeks ago using 3M 8115 epoxy, I installed it by myself and the 3M gave me plenty of working time to make sure it was tight against the windshield area and it was aligned to the doors well. I have the headlights pretty much finished and the passenger door almost finished as of last night. The top surround was a little long and I used the stainless trim as a guide when I trimmed the surround to the door opening. I'm using Evercoat Corvette Panel Adhesive/Filler #870 for all the body work.

We put a Summersheim (spelling??) front clip on a friend's '67 and thought it was EXCELLENT also. No complaints whatsoever. I met Raymon Leicht, aka: Vettseller at NCRS/Kissimmee about 3 or 4 yrs ago (www.vetteseller.com) and we've been friends since. He stocks the Summersheim stuff, so there's no wait and that's where we got this one. We also used the 8115 3M for installation and would highly recommend it. One other thing we used for the first time (at least MY first time) was the black panel strip adhesive that "brand X" as someone else referred to them as, as the filler. It seems to come about as close to the factory glue that GM filled in inperfections with as anything I've ever seen and I haven't seen any signs of shrinkage. It's kinda' funky to sand, because it still feels gooey on the surface until you start sanding on it, but I really like the product.
