Were the timing indicator marks painted fully or was the numbers taped over?

Painted over for sure. Your car sounds pretty original, but you might verify you have the correct tab.

Tracy, Thanks for the pic.s I will check tomorrow on the timing marks, pretty sure that its original, I am doing a frame off on my 63, as the chassis is almost done, started it in Nov. when the car came home, It to many issues, My 63 had been sitting since 81 and was just brought by a corvette dealer and he only did what he had to do to get running.

Is the 62 340 hp timing cover the same as the 63, as pictured here?

Yes it is...in fact that timing indicator goes way back to late 50s 283s with 6" dampers. It was just repositioned for the 8" damper in 62. The timing indicator changed in 64 because the timing marks were off due to the larger 8 inch damper.
