    67 Jack Handle

Please let me know if the jack handle for a 67 had any date coding or GM cat # on it. I was told that (O) was on them which was supposed to be a NCRS requirement. (O) apparently stands for Otterburn. Thank you.

    Re: 67 Jack Handle

Here's a few pictures of Jack Handles.

The following information on the Jack Handles.

Bottom is a 63 handle with the "O" on the socket. No holes! Notice the 63 handle has a ridge on the outside of the socket head.

Next Up is an original jack from a late 65-67. No "O" on the socket. Notice that there is no ridge on the outside of the socket head. Probably because of the Rubber Ring!

Next Up is and NOS jack handle. No ridge and no "O".

Next Up is just a handle with only 1 hole.

      Re: 67 Jack Handle

Pictured on top (left photo) is an original 1966 Corvette jack handle with "O" casting (Otterburn, the manufacturer) and one hole in the handle, GM # 3858953, from my 1966 Corvette that I bought in 1979. The "U"-shaped X-sect of the handle measures 0.73" by 0.88". The lug head measures 1.08" and 1.15" in diameter at the very end. Years ago I owned a NOS 3858953 jack handle and it had only one hole in the handle.

On the bottom is a 3898172 jack handle with 3 holes in the handle made by a different manufacturer that I bought at a swap meet and used on 1967-1982 Corvettes. There were variations of the 3898172 jack handle from 1967 to 1982 but all had 3 holes in the handle. The "U"-shape X-sect. of this handle measures 0.89" by 0.91". The lug head measures 1.14" and 1.22" in diameter at the very end.

During the last 30 years I have owned a few NOS 3898172 handles, some had a white GM tag with the part number and some had the part number stenciled on the handle in yellow paint.

          Stephen,

Is there the letter "O" forged on the lug wrench?

Sorry David, but it would be a stretch of the imagination to think that jack handle was placed in a 66 by GM at St. Louis. Not impossible but a stretch.
In a survey conducted years ago owners were asked to identify their jack handle. Several hundred assisted in that survey and by late 65 the jack handle you are showing was not placed in Corvettes.
Also, by late 65 there was a large rubber anti rattle grommet placed around the jack handle head.
Just sharing the results of a survey conducted by NCRS members.

What year was this survey conducted and where can I get a copy? I bought my 1966 Corvette in 1979 and this is the lug wrench that was in the car along with the original jack. I also owned a NOS 3858953 lug wrench with one hole in the handle which I sold for big $. The 3858953 part number agrees with the 1966 AIM. At this point in time I am still convinced that I have any original 1966 Corvette lug wrench.

                David,

The results of the Jack Survey was published in "The Restorer" several years ago. The results of the jack handle survey was not the primary focus of the survey so details like "0" stamping and number of holes was not asked. Some people wrote on their survey and detailed things about their jack handle. Not enough information was gathered to publish.

                  David,
There is a small "O" cast into the shaft.

I have the same date as Stephen's, "C 7". Has the "A" stamp on top. Car has a January 11, 1967 build date, so I'm not sure how it came to be with this car, but it has been in the jack stowage compartment for 3+ decades now.

Mine also has the same mark in the same spot on the jack handle, can't tell if it's an "O" like the kind referenced (but not pictured?) for earlier years, or just a casting mark?

I have every issue of "The Corvette Restorer" since 1980 and several issues before 1980. I guess it will take me a few minutes to find the correct issue. Isn't this 1966 Corvette jack handle question that we are talking about the number of holes in the handle? I will check out this "Jack Survey".

Joe Ray, I found your article (Volume 11, #3, Winter 1985). You showed close-ups of the socket end of two jack handles, one with a 1" depth from the edge of the socket-end to the line where it begins to neck-down, and another measuring only 1/2" across that dimension.

The one I have measures 11/16" at that point, so unless there was a third type of jack handle, what I have seems not to be a 1967 Corvette jack handle, although it appears correct otherwise.

All I see in this "Jack Survey" about the number of holes in the lug wrenches is the following statement: "There were also many variations of the holes in the handle of the wrenches." This does not tell me anything. As far as I am concerned my 1966 Corvette lug wrench is original with the single hole in the handle unless someone comes up with some REAL research data "beyond a reasonable doubt".

My ORIGINAL jack is what you call a "TYPE III" and does not have a date code. Date coding of all types of jacks (scissor type & post type) began in 1967 by the following manufacturers: AUSCO, Universal Tool Co., and the Walker Manufacturing Co. The Ryerson & Haynes Company started date coding jacks as early as 1965 but only for the Ford Motor Co. I have about 50 to 60 post type jacks from the 1960's and early 1970's in my collection.
