    C1 Battery "J" Bolts

The previous post on battery "J" bolts got me thinking.

When replacing a battery on a C1, how do you get the "J" bolts into the top retainer and get the wing nuts started if you only have the 2 hands and arms God gave you? What prevents the "J" bolts from falling down when you let go of one to put a wing nut on the other? Assume a modern Group 24 battery.

You don't want to hear this but what I did was remove the fender shield & had the car on a lift. I pushed the j bolts up from below and my buddy wing nutted from the top!.

Most of the time I use some words that God doesn't approve of.

To keep the J-bolt in place while I put in the battery and hold-down, I have used a small gob of 3M strip caulk on the bottom end of the bolt for the outboard bolt. It sure isn't pretty but my garage is attached to the house and I can't use the appropriate profanity during the installation if I do it any other way. Jerry

I take a small piece of rubber hose (like fuel line) that just fits over the J portion of the bolt and make a ring about 1/8" think. It holds the bolt in place while I secure the nuts.. I leave them on, but you could always knock them of with a screwdriver
