Re: SJ4653 Jack
I need to saw off 0.65" from each side of the base. The threaded rod on the reproduction jack may be longer and therefore, the jack is not fitting into the spare tire rim as deep as the original. I might be able to cut off part of the end of the rod if necessary so the jack fits deeper into the spare tire rim.
If one of you gentlemen could measure the threaded rod from tip to tip, that would be helpful. Thank you for your assistance.- Top

13-5/8". I cut off approximately 0.7" off of one side of the base and that helped problem. Will probable cut off 3/8" off of threaded rod so the jack sets down into the rim a little deeper. Thank you for the measurement.- Top

Re: SJ4653 Jack
Back in the late 1980's I bought a NOS SJ4653 jack at a swap meet in Shirley, MA, for $10. It was painted red with a sticker on it from an auto parts store (I forget the name), and came with a handle much longer then the 53-61 Corvette handle. Apparently this auto parts store chain bought their "universal" jacks from AUSCO and sold them with a much longer truck handle. The jack found a new home in Hawaii shortly thereafter. The jack was identical to the 53-61 Corvette jack.
I have some 57"+/- long Chevy truck handles for very cheap $ that could be converted to the 44.5" (I believe) 53-61 Corvette handles by someone with some welding talent.- Top

Re: SJ4653 Jack
Hi David,
I believe the name of the auto parts store was Western Auto. You are correct about the color being the only difference. There was an article many years ago in the Restorer about it. I still look at every garage sale and swap meet for one.Back in the late 1980's I bought a NOS SJ4653 jack at a swap meet in Shirley, MA, for $10. Re: SJ4653 Jack
Joe,
I had the same problem as you with a replacement jack, so I did what you did(or thinking of doing.....) years ago, cut off some of the threaded rod so it would fit inside the diameter the spare wheel........
Ooooooops! Big mistake silly me.....I got a flat tire in the rear one day, and went to put the jack under the rear axle. I forgot about one thing when I cut the threaded rod.........the jack cannot now be lowered enough because it ran out of threads. It's higher now.
I couldn't get it under the axle with the flat tire!........
I hope you don't run into the same issue. Best to check it'll still work with a flat if you cut the rod.
