    7017320 FI Fuel Filter

I am trying to separate the fuel filter housing on a 1961 7017320 fuel injection unit. Bubba must have over tightened the filter case, or it has been together for so long that it has sealed it self together. I have made an aluminum spanner wrench for the three notch end of the fuel filter and I am nervous about the amount of pressure needed to un-screw the unit. Has anyone had this problem and if so how did you get the filter case apart with damage?

    Thanks for any help!

Ray: I have found that having one person holding the top portion of the filter, while the second person carefully wrenches the bottom portion of the filter may give you good results. Mine was also tight. Mark

      Ray,

There is an O-ring that seals the two case halves of that filter together. My guess is that it has glued itself to both halves.

If that were mine, I'd saturate the O-ring, as well as can be done, with a penetrating oil (Kroil, PB Blaster, ....) over a period of a couple of days.

Afterwards, I'd try gently and slightly tightening the filter before trying to loosen it. It might help to tighten and loosen the filter several times to "worry" the O-ring into releasing its grip.

      Good luck!

      Jim
