    C-1 Door Hanging and adjustment

I have just removed my passenger door hinges, restored them and added new bushings and pins. What is the correct way to re-align the door so that it opens and closes correctly? The passenger never closed normally, you always had to "lift" up on the handle to get it to shut. Upon removing the hinges, the bottom pin was almost 1/2" up and out of it's seat. The bushings were both shot as well. Did they use spacers around the doors at the factory when the doors were installed and adjusted? I marked the piller before I removed the hinge just so I would have a starting reference. Any "been there done that" help would be appriciated!

How about the clips on the hinges that hold the door open. Did you replace those or were your's OK. They are riveted on. I don't know if any of those rivet tools would work for these rivets.

Roger, They worked fine when the door was open. Upon inspection, they were all four intact and had the same spacing. I am just wondering about the seqence of re-installing the door and adjustment.

Yes, they did. The striker (on the lock pillar) was installed LAST.

The door was hung, spacers positioned (which held the rear of the door about 3/16" high to the quarter panel to compensate for the weight of the door glass and hardware that was installed much later), and the necessary adjustments were made at the door side and hinge pillar side of the hinges to position the door correctly in the opening.

The last step, after fitting the door in the opening, was to install the striker on the lock pillar, measure for any fore-aft spacers required, and adjust it to set the door in-out at the rear (flush to the front of the quarter panel) and for proper smooth engagement of the rotor and faceplate on the door latch to the striker on the lock pillar.

This sequence is described in detail on pages 1-13 through 1-15 in the ST-12.

          Hey John,
Thanks for the info. I will dive in to it this weekend. I assume from your post that I take off the striker and re-set it when the door is adjusted ? Sorry I sound so green........Tim

also keep in mind that the door Always settles a little bit until you drive the car a bit so leave the door panel off until you are sure they aren't gonna move any more, the job is a little tricky in that the hinge and the door both have adjustments, it usually takes several hours to get both sides right, just take your time and it will be fine

That's correct - you don't want the striker to influence the door fit in the opening or how it closes at all (other than setting its in-out flush relationship to the quarter panel).
