I am converting from spin-on, back to cartridge. Took off the filter, then the converter. I replaced the gasket between the by-pass (???) and the block and replaced with the shorter bolts. Now I'm not sure of the order of the components. Cannister with long center bolt with copper washer on the outside, then the spring with the rubber end up into the cone shaped thing, then the cartridge on that. I put a new big ring gasket up into the groove that the cannister should mate with. Tightened pretty tight. Fired up the engine and oil all over coming from the cannister. Is there a schematic of the order of components? I just read that the cannister should be torqued to 20-25 ft lbs. Am I missing something? Gave up for the night rather than lay out in the driveway with a trouble light.

Re: 62 Converting back to cartridge filter
John,
Its not clear in your sequence if you changed - that is removed - the spin on flange and reinstalled the original style adapter.
The seal goes between that and the block and with all the care possible, the same thing happened to me the first time, a quart or two on the ground instantly.
It was most likely the seal got twisted or pinched.
I put in a new hard seal and tightened it up hard and it was OK on the second attempt.- Top

Re: 62 Converting back to cartridge filter
I removed the spin on flange and the old rubber seal/gasket. I am positive that I got the new rubber seal in straight. I had to help the very last inch or so of the seal with a screwdriver. No holes poked in it. I will pull the whole works off again this afternoon and try again. Used to just tighten up by feel in the old days. Do I have the sequence of the spring, etc. correct? Is there a picture somewhere? I looked in the shop manual.- Top

Re: 62 Converting back to cartridge filter
Just took the filter cannister off again. Here is what I have, plus the gasket up in the groove. The by-pass is bolted in place. (1) is there more than a copper washer on the outside under the head of the bolt? Is that all that seals it when tightened? (2) see the spring with rubber on one end and the cone shaped thing. How do they go in the bottom of the cannister over the bolt? After that the cartridge filter, with the rubber gasket.- Top

Re: 62 Converting back to cartridge filter
I think the oil was coming from around the top of the cannister. But I still need to know which way the spring goes on the inside. The rubber end up into the cone or down toward the bottom of the cannister. The new gasket looks okay and not twisted or broken.- Top

Re: 62 Converting back to cartridge filter
John, It appears I am missing the steel and rubber washers and the retainer clip. Can I just get a regular steel and rubber washer to fit the bolt? Also which way does the spring go? Rubber end up or down? What purpose does the retainer clip serve? Doesn't the cone just go into the bottom of the cartridge?- Top

The retainer clip keeps the spring from popping all the rest of the pieces off the end of the bolt. You might want to get the kit so you have all the right pieces.- Top
