Date code timing question - rear end housing

A question for the judges on the dating for a '63 rear end housing. Would a casting date of mid Sept '62 and stamp date on bottom flange of mid October '62 be considered too far in advance for use on a car with a build date of 1-21-63? Or is it 'within acceptable date range'?

    Thanks in advance...

I'm not a judge. However, I can tell you that the time interval between the differential carrier housing casting/ stamped date codes and the build date of the car is well within the acceptable range for NCRS judging. It might be a little longer than usually occurred but it's well within acceptable standards.

Thnx Joe... agree it probably 'in the zone'... actually, I'm not sure if they even judge rear end housing dates now that I think about it... still, am curious how far back it could reasonably go, or if this was still within the typical date spreads.

Mel -- definitely within zone of many examples; maybe not quite typical, depending on whether start or end of a model year run, maybe a labor stirke, and the rarity of the ratio/posi combo (low demand - FILO inventory scenario).

Eg. I have this '64 diff: cast Oct '63 (J-18-3), assembled Jan '64 (CF 1-3-64).
another cast D-5-5; assembled FA 7-15-65, car produced Aug 2nd '65.
another I've seen: cast D-10-5; assembled AM 7-6-65, car produced Aug 2nd '65.

Here's another case, both engine and diff very close, but trans assembled 3_1/2 months prior [from '65 Protect-o-Plate of first car I ever owned]

            Mel,

The rear end housing date and numbers are not judged, at least not on mid-year cars. That information is too hard to visualize.

Thanks to all for the inputs.. wow, Joe. If I follow your comments above, your case was assembled 10-8 and the car built 2 days later on 10-10.. thats really close.. yet others at 3 months. Just shows how wide the date spreads can be.

Re: Date code timing question - rear end housing

Mel, if you have Noland Adams book, Vol 2 1963 - 1967, look at page 186 under Rear Axles.

From the VIN's listed and what the Codes are you can start to draw conclusions as to how close the dates are.

I believe the heading Casting Date is incorrect, it should probably read Assembly Date.

The dates are close. Noland projected Oct 12th or 15th back in 1984 for my build vs todays calculators that put it at Oct 10th.
