Re: Ink stamp date code on 67 fan-clutch
I wrote an article on this that ran in Restorer Magazine. There was a 'third' source qualified for base engine Corvette fan clutch supply in the late 60's: Delco.
Crack open your copy of an applicable AIM and you'll see something like this from the '71 model year:
[13] 3916139 Clutch Assy -- Fan Blade
[13] 3916140 Opt.
[13] 5329100 Opt.
The first two items are our old friends Schwitzer and Eaton while the third item with a different part number structure is a 'clone' of the Eaton style coil clutch made by Delco Products in Dayton, OH...- Top

Re: Ink stamp date code on 67 fan-clutch
Jack,
Do have any idea when exactly the Delco Products fan-clutches arrived on the scene? The earliest Delco clutch that I have is dated the 127th day of 1968 (May 6, 1968).
Over the years I have collected the following coil spring type fan-clutches all w/3.25" bolt circles (except the 1968 "CN" fan-clutch which has a 3.00" bolt circle) made by Delco Prod. Div. GMC, Dayton, Ohio, USA:
1. 6" dia. from 1968 Chev. w/AC with 3931002 E68 (May 1968) 7-blade fan, ink stamped "CN" with "5389475 and "127 68" stamped on hub (127th day of 1968).
2. 6" dia. from 1969 Chev. w/AC with 3937779 J68 (Sept. 1968) 7-blade fan, ink stamped "CH" and stamped "4939899" & "024 69" (24th day of 1969) on hub.
3. 6" dia. from 1970 Chev. w/AC with GM # 3956684 7-blade fan (stamped "94" = Hayes-Albion # 159432), ink stamped "CG" 7 "4939900" & "112 70" (112th day of 1970) on the hub.
4. 7 1/4" dia. from 70 Pontiac. "PC" ink stamp and "4949706" & "034 70" (34th day of 1970) on hub.
5. 7 1/4" dia. from 1976 Camaro 6cyl. w/AC with GM # 3947772 7-blade fan dated "K75" (Oct. 1975), ink stamp "AK" on face and "4974720" & "269 75" (269th day od 1975) on hub.

Re: Ink stamp date code on 67 fan-clutch
For Corvette, the adoption of the 'third' fan clutch is documented in my Restorer article as having come on stream in the 1968 model year... I don't think the current edition (or perhaps the pending new release) of the Judging Guide mention this part.
If a judge is in a hurry, it's easy to mistake the Delco clutch for an Eaton unit. They look VERY much alike.- Top

Jack,
All the Delco clutches are stamped "Delco Prod..........................USA".
Do the NCRS judges uses magnifying glasses and flashlights?
Do you remember what issue of the Restorer magazine you wrote the article or at least the year? I have all of them since 1980 and even a few earlier issues.

Re: Ink stamp date code on 67 fan-clutch
Jack,
Nice article. I never read the article as that was when I had a case of "Corvette Burnout". At the time I was more interested in my 1970 Camaro SS350 project.
The 6" diameter Delco Products "CJ" fan-clutch (stamped "5329100") in your article (photos #2 and #3 on page 31) dated the 249th day of 1968 has the "angled" reservoir. This fan-clutch would be correct for a 69 Corvette as 5329100 is listed as one of the 3 fan-clutch numbers on UPC 6, sheet A4 in the 1969 AIM. The 1968 AIM also lists GM # 5329100.
My 6" diameter passenger car Delco Products "CN" fan-clutch (stamped "5389475") and dated the 127th day of 1968 with 3.00" fan mounting bolt circle & 1.75" W/P bolt circle looks identical to your 6" diameter Corvette Delco Products "CJ" fan-clutch. I assume the difference is internal as I believe that both measure 1.8" from the fan to W/P mounting surfaces.

Re: Ink stamp date code on 67 fan-clutch
I found an original 1966 Oldsmobile fan-clutch currently on Ebay that is ink stamped "391191" (the Oldsmobile part number), "H23G" (August 23, 1966), and "OW". I believe that the "O" in the "OW" code is for Oldsmobile. All the 2-letter Chevrolet codes in the 1960's start with the letter "C". I have also found that the 2-letter codes on Pontiac fan-clutches start with the letter "P". The 2-digit code on fan-clutches in the 1970's do not seem to follow this format.
Note that this Oldsmobile Aug. 1966 fan-clutch has "angled" fluid reservoirs which are more typical of Chevrolet fan-clutches starting in 1968. My original 1965 Pontiac LeSabre 7-blade fan (that looks like a 64-65 Corvette 327 w/AC fan) also came with a 6" dia. fan-clutch with "angled" fluid reservoirs.

Re: Ink stamp date code on 67 fan-clutch
I found a NOS 6" dia. Eaton fan-clutch for $10 at a swap meet in Stafford Springs, CT, a few weeks ago for my "almost 64-65 Corvette 327 w/AC 7-blade 18" fan (with 3.25" BC)". I do not know exactly what the application is as of this fan-clutch as it is for a fan with a 3.25" BC and a water pump with a 1.75" BC. The ink stamps on the face are "FC-16" and "H 28 J" (August 28, 1969). The fan-clutch looks very similar to the the "early" 1967 "CJ" Eaton fan-clutch dated "L27G" (November 27, 1966) as shown in the photos below. The hub on the FC-16 fan-clutch is a slightly different but both have a 1.75" BC. The measurement from the fan mounting surface to the water pump surface is also slightly longer (2.2") then the original "CJ" fan clutch (1.8").
Does anyone have an Eaton fan-clutch aftermarket catalog from the 1970's?

Re: Ink stamp date code on 67 fan-clutch
Correction:
I now BELIEVE that my "EATON", "CJ", "L 27 G" fan-clutch was dated December 27, 1966, even though it came on a fan dated "L6" (Nov. 1966). The fan had a STAMPED date code where the letter "I" is NOT used. The date code on the fan-clutch was an "ink" stamping by Eaton which apparently does use the letter "I".
I also believe that Jerry's "L 12 G" fan clutch is dated December 12, 1966 as his car has a build date of June 29, 1967.
It was the letter "L" on both the fan and the fan-clutch that threw me off.....way off.
I have never seen the letter "M" on an Eaton fan-clutch.
I thank Gary B. for the heads up.
