1977/1979 Tilt Tele Horn Button Assembly - Unobtainable!

I'm looking for a 1977 and a 1979 Horn Button for Tilt/Tele. They are both the same emblem design. I have exhausted my search with online searches, phone calls, Driveline searches, etc. Every vendor is out of them and all are waiting 4-6 weeks from the supplier.

It looks like this .......77/79 Horn Button

I tried Zip, CC, Paragon, Ecklers, KeenParts, Stoudt, TrimParts, & a few others I can't rmember.

I'm trying to locate one for a friend in Norway for his '77, and one for a friend here in FL for his '79. If anyone has a lead on one or two of these infamous little critters I'd really appreciate it. These things are harder to find than '57 elephant ears!

    Thanks,
    Rich

      Hi James,

Thanks for the lead, however I saw that a while ago and the ad is totally wrong. I sent this note to the seller, but no update in the listing.

      Dear gmpartsfinder,
Hi, Just a friendly FYI, your part is a emblem, not a cap, and it is correct for 1980 & 1981 Corvette only, not 1977 to 1981. Yes it will fit, but not the right description. 77 & 79 used the same emblem, but different from 78. 78 used a unique Anniversary emblem.
      Regards,
      Rich

      Thanks,

        Rich,

Have you considered purchasing used parts? Several used part sources have been mentioned on the TDB.

You may also want to call Bob (Parts Manager) at Corvette Mike in Anaheim, CA. If he doesn't have it, he may have some leads. His number is: (800) 327-VETT

I was thinking nice used also but no-go. Both owners want New Repro or NOS.

          I'll call Bob.......Thanks!

That might mean they wait until the supplier covers his back order situation. A lot of these type of these parts are made by Trim Products. They're a solid firm...

You might want to visit their web site and/or confirm the supplier source with one of the catalog houses you've contacted. Then, when you nail down the source, contact them directly to understand what's up...

Jack, I think you meant to say "Trim Parts", right? They make a great line of items and very high quality, but unfortunately they are not the supplier of the 77/79 pieces. I went to their website a few days ago and they only supply the 69-75 versions.....Here. It's a very nice repro. I recently received a '67 Horn Button from them and it was superb.

So I asked several suppliers who they get the 77/79 buttons from......and they either "didn't know" or flat out said they cannot tell me. However a few mentioned that they come from Asia. I am hoping the boat does not sink.

              Still looking.....thanks.

I believe the piece offered in the eBay listing is a GM #14023243 which was used in PRODUCTION for L1980-81 Corvettes. It became SERVICE for the 1977-E80 applications in July, 1987 when the earlier emblem was discontinued. The 14020243 remains available from GM to this very day.

By the way, while the 1977-82 horn caps for tilt/tele applications are available in reproduction as an assembly, they were never available from GM as an assembly. They had to be obtained in their three separate component pieces with the cap requiring paint to match.

Thanks Joe & Jim, et al........

I spoke with Corvette Mike's parts guys, and Wilcox Corvette on Friday and they're looking too, but haven't heard back yet.

However, I think I found a nice used original. Working it out now. I still need another for a local friend's '79.

I think I have 2-3 hours into this little devil.

Found this one.....from a very nice member who contacted me. He wasn't sure what it was and had several buttons in a box. We figured it out it was what I needed.

It was brown, I masked it and shot it with semi-flat black. It's looks glossy in the photo light. I'm not sure if it's original, I think so. The number on the back of the surround is 458908.

GM #458908 was the part number for the cap used for most, if not all, of 1977. It was replaced by GM #459082 which was used for 78-79 models.

                          GT Stamp comments?

Notice the GT stamp. What does it indicate?

The pair on the dark background are 67's, one believed OFI.

Most likely, the "GT" represents a manufacturer's ID mark. Just what company "GT" denotes is unknown. Most probably, it's a company no one ever heard of. Most OEM suppliers are.
