    66 Conv Project value

    Hi Guys,
Came across a 66 conv project which has been setting for 10 yrs in a garage. It needs everything, interior, all cosmetics including paint, brightwork etc. Seems to all be there for the most part but is a replacement engine w/ aftermarket intake, carb, alt, etc. The car will run but needs new brakes, calipers, lines, and probably a new gas tank as well. You get the point, its a project. I know the market took a hit but wondering where this car should be priced. Frame looks good w/out rot surprisingly! Looks to be a maroon/ blk car. No frills, and appears to have been a 300hp 4 sp car. The car is owned by a friend of a friend who thinks he wants to sell vs fixing it. I agree as projects can go on forever.
Any help on where it should be priced would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for your time and input.

$15k. You can get upside down real fast on this one especially if you have to pay someone to do body + paint work. Add a "correct replacement" engine and parts... you can drop $15-20k on body and engine alone if you're not careful.

The old adage is to buy the best one you can afford. Frankly, even at "free" this one may go upside down.

How is the frame? the birdcage?

If those are solid, you could make a nice hot rod out of it for some serious money, or restore it for even more money.

        IMO
        $15-20k

At least in this part of the world, there are no 15K 66 convertibles. Even at the project level. If anyone around here would ever mention a 66 Corvette convertible in a garage for 15K, there would be a stampede to get to it !! One might get trampled !!!

Yep, and those that stampeded a year ago to get a 66 for 45k that claimed to be a BB, but in reality was a with a 65 396 motor, badly repaired major front end hit, and all for a car that left STL as a 327 they did even try to pull the body to change the fuel line, just bent it a little

              I don't disagree.

However, with today's current market prices you'd still make no money off this car and likely be upside down. I'd rather drive one for 3 years than restore it for 3 years, even though I very much enjoy working on them. Maybe that's why I drive mine and work on others.

Thanks guys! I am getting the feeling the car should be bought for around $15k and better if it was on the southern end of 15. Car is sound as I can tell but will need some work to make it road worthy. I will keep you up to date if it works out in my favor.

Sorry but I have to chime in,there's not one guy on this board that would sell a mid yr for 15k. As stated previously, if he advertises for 15 stand clear of the stampede. As far as making money in this hobby, if you got the car for free and elves worked on it while you were sleeping you'd be over ended.

I've seen plenty of midyear projects on ebay bid upwards of 25k. If you could get it for 15, it would be quite a bargain.

                      LOL, how true.

However, he has to determine his goal for the car as well as his need for a project. I'm just trying to be a realist and remind him that even at a low price, well.... in the end everything has its price.

I loved this. Funny but unfortunately pretty accurate too.

Like I tell my wife, they wouldn't call them hobbies if you made money on them. She then usually follows up questioning why I have so darn many hobbies. Then I remind her about her hobbies which seem to include shoe and clothing collecting among others I don't understand. Ah, good times, good times.

She always wins though, especially since my hobbies are definitely more expensive...not to mention the fact that it's always wise to let her win regardless.
