Did all original small splash come drilled (or punched) for the side pipe front brackets or was that another modification for the option?

Pete good question. Bill he is talking about the front side pipe cover hanger. Ther bracket was riveted to the cover and attached to the fenderskirt/splash shield with a 5/16 hex head 10-24 thread bolt.
To answer your question I'll have to look at my plie of original shields and see. But from memory all 66-67's I think had them. Not sure about 65. We'll see what others say.
As you probable know none of the side pipe cars had stapled rubbers.

Let me take a guess; not sure about '66, but in the '65 AIM, on UPC N14, sheet 3, view B, it shows the skirt shield (outer splash shield) being drilled for the U-nut that attaches the sidepipe front bracket. Therefore, the basic shield would have been the same, regardless of exhaust option, and modified at the assembly plant according to the build sheet. Same thing for the rubber seal along the edge that contacts the frame.
Probably had an off-line operation that modified a pile of standard shields with the hole and the nut and NO rubber or staples, to satisfy the N14 cars, as they came along.- Top

The A.I.M. sheet indicates that the hole was drilled at assembly through both the fiberglass skirt and the front flange on the steel splash shield behind it ("skirt & shield" as shown in the note).- Top

At some point, possibly 66 and later, shields would be drilled at the source, including those for service.
The part number didn't change though.
By the way, the shields used for 65 and early 66 with side mounted exhaust were unique. There was a small trimmed piece of metal fitted and spot welded in place in an attempt to seal the shield to the frame and the leg of the battery box. I have a picture of an original from a 66, #5644, that still has the piece in place.
I think Wayne Midkiff knows about this unique shield. In fact, I think he has one also??

Could you post a picture of that shield? And what about staple holes for non Side exhaust cars when were they drilled/punched, since staples holes are a deduct for side pipe cars and they modified the original shields for the front hangers I am just curious about how they determined the placement of staples now.- Top

Holes were created when the staples were driven thru the weather strip and shield as part of the process to attach the weatherstrip. No weatherstrip=no holes.Bill Clupper #618- Top

I think the holes for staple/wire was punched as the w/strip was installed.
The location of the staples for w/strips for cars without side exhaust was probably a bit random.- Top
