    '63-'64 Differentials

As a service to fellow members I put together some photos of the 63-64 diff's because I often see questions on the early cars. A lot of guys don't know what was in there in 63-64 or what they may be looking at once they pop the cover off or go to buy one.
As many know the 63-64 optional posi wasn't the best out there and many are long gone by now. I still see some but you can't rebuild them nor would you want to unless you just want the original weak posi?

Here is a '63. It will bolt into any vette from 63-79 although in stock form is not recommended for most applications.

The covers didn't have a date code like the later covers do. The side plug is larger and has a machine thread. The later covers use a 3/4npt thread. The vent is steel

The top casting has through holes because it's thinner. This is a 63

    Here is a 64

casting date on the LH side

The front bracket hole is tapped 7/16-14, 65-79 had thru holes

Inside the spreader holes are large on both sides. The later housings have 2 hole sizes.

Here is an original Dana posi in a stone stock 64 I did. You can see the difference if you compare to a 1st or 2nd design Eaton posi found in the 65-79's. BTW,the 65-68 Eatons weren't much better in stock form, most I see are cracked.

Here is a 1st design Eaton in a 63. This is also a 4 series case.

The Ring & pinion and pinion yoke are the obsolete coarse spline. They also used a small crush sleeve because of a soulder in the pinion.

Hope this helps answer those questions I often see.

    Re: '63-'64 Differentials

Hi Gary, found my 64 has a 1st design Eaton, are the yoke and gears necessarily of the later design too? The ring gear is 3:36 dated 3/63. Looks like an old warranty job? Thanks!

Drove the 64 over 5000 miles to three Regionals and the San Jose National, one dust storm and 40 lbs of bugs!

Chances are the original posi blew apart and someone installed the Eaton a long time ago. I would check it for cracks. If you have a 63 R&P then it's the obsolete coarse design. I found those into 65's.

The side yokes, hard to say unless you have them out. If they have the center drill hole they're originals. The rebuilt ones use a flat face. The early side yokes are pretty good. I posted about those a couple of weeks ago. I've been able to reuse them many times. If you have yours out you can check them.

Gary, the side yokes center drill hole, where would it be? Have pictures of when the differential was out, where do you check? Thanks,

Here is that thread from a couple of weeks ago. I show the original yokes in it.

Wasn't the first design Positraction - the one shown in the 1963 Corvette Shop Manual of Borg-Warner design/manufacture?

Thanks Gary, that's what I was looking for. I have the original side yokes, R & P gears. Was rebuilt about 15K ago and is smooth, no chatter, think I'll leave it alone and drive it!

Might as well, if you have a problem in the future you know what you have to deal with.
