    63 fuel filler door

Could someone please post close-up front and back pics of an original early 63 fuel filler door (roller-type).

    Thanks,

A restored original door. Underside has been re-plated. Hope this helps.

Thanks Jim, mine came apart and needs a repair, so I wanted to make sure I make it look like it did before.

        Who restored it Jim?
Once some of the tabs broke on mine I thought it was not repairable.

Sidney---I bought this door from John Meissinger several years back. Whether he did the restoration or someone else, I do not know, but you can contact him through this forum and he might be able to give you some info.

I have found that two of the tabs on the back (the two closest to the hinge) are removable. My question is: are they all removable, or, only these two?

            Thanks,

You will find that they are all removable but not replaceable!

Hi Joe, by "not replaceable" do you mean I can't put them back on, or, if I lose them. I'm out of luck? Or both?

                  Thanks

Michael, Jerry Cribbs from the New England chapter (I think) used to restore the roller cap doors. He did a wonderful job in the old days. Don't know if he still does it now.
Like Joe Ray said once the tabs are removed they are history unless you can glue them back on.
I admire you for wanting to restore an original but I will say the repro is one pretty part. Only a one point deduct. John

Where do you find a 63 Roller Door Repo that looks that good?
I sent (2) back because all the tabs were broken.
It appeared that the first time you closed it too hard, it would have came apart.

Thanks John. I got a repop from Paragon last week. Its not quite the same: the tabs are different (swedged over to clamp the backing plate, not pressed-on) and the shape of the slide cutouts is not exactly the same, but otherwise it looks nice. Its on my car for now, but I'm still going to try to restore the original. It'll be tricky to try to get those tabs back on, but I'll give it a shot.

                          Re: 63 fuel filler door

Michael....I preferred to save my orig '63 fuel door but did replace the plastic face/lens in the resto process. Since my chrome appeared to be in pretty good shape, it was a no-brainer providing I could "replace" the tabs that were removed for access.

I have a couple of pictures I can send you if interested - car was Top Flighted a few years ago and repair went undectable for that outing.

In essence, I removed three tabs I believe to permit the rear retaining plate to slide out, and once the new insert was installed and plate slid back in place, I "built the tabs" from good old JB Weld. Key here is to catch the epoxy in a semi-flexible state where I could cut it to shape with exacto-knife, also carefully "slide" the knife blade under the outside edges of the expxy (now shaped like the orig tabs). This makes the tab appear to be factory.

Since I don't know how to post pictures on this Forum, the email will have to suffice - rlyoung63@aol.com will get you what you need. To obtain the finish that worked for me, I dabbed on a touch of silver "Rub 'n Buff" wax-like paint. Incidentally, that stuff works wonders for touching up rusted bolts etc. that you do not wish to have replated. Works for me......Bob.

                            Re: 63 fuel filler door

Back in the day I bought a S/W coupe with a roller door - somehow two of the tabs were missing - I was at a show in Conn. came back to the car after lunch to find someone looking at my door. He told me his name was Jerry Cribbs and he had restored the door for the guy I bought it from in Jersey. He was not happy about the missing tabs gave me his card and told me to mail him the door and he would repair it - I mailed it and he repaired it free of charge. In the 25 years I have been in the hobby it's about the nicest act I have ever heard of - he is a great guy, but the last time I saw him he told me he went out of the business.
