    1962 Turn Signal removal

I'm having trouble replacing the guts of the turn signal assembly. I have read many old posts to no avail. How do I get the old assembly out without breaking anything? There is a slotted screw head on the left where the turn lever screws in but this is very tight and only turns a tiny bit before it stops, I don't want to force it until I know that it has to come out.
    Thanks .. Brian

Have you removed the housing from the steering column?

No, I thought that maybe I could just pull the assembly out from the front. It sounds like I need to pull the whole black housing off too?

Yes, I guess you can remove the turn signal mechanism (actuator ring) with the bell still on the column.

Remove the turn signal stalk. That big screw at 9 o'clock - right by where the stalk goes is what holds the mechanism in place. It's just that 1 big screw.

Here's a good article, with pictures, on the mechanism.

I got it ... Knowing that the big screw had to come out made me force it harder. It turned out that the reason it wouldn't come out was that at some point in the past the signal lever threads had been stripped and someone drilled them out and fitted a helicoil. When they drilled it, they went too far and went into the big screw, so it was pinned. I couldn't move it, so I thought that there must be some other secret. Thank you VERY much for your help. The article with the pictures is invaluable.
