    "Which shop manual says that?"

The 53-62 Corvette manual doesn't seem to mention the oil pressure relief valve.

It refers you to the 61 full size Chevy manual. The 283 section refers you to the 348 section.

    "Which washer?"

On top of the spring in my pressure relief valve, is a washer, not a solid disc.

I can't find any pictures of what it's supposed to look like.

Look at the photo in Wayne's post, a couple of posts up.

That round disc with the hole in it. I'm calling that a washer.

I gave it a couple of taps with a hammer and it stayed in place while I bolted it in place.

        Robert -

Functionally, the orientation of the valve makes no difference; the note in the 348 section just says it's easier to see it if it's oriented with the disc outboard.

This is the theory of operation, thanks for that detail.

Is there any way to check for proper function?

Or if someone has messed with the valve such that the oil is not generally being filtered?
I know you purists will hate me, but we ALWAYS removed the spring & washer & put a short bolt & locknut in it's place. This guaranteed full filtration of the oil. We ran up to 50 wt. oil and 80 pound high volume pumps, as recommended by GM racing, and never had a problem with leaks or filters. PS, the bearings in these motors stayed in "like new" condition.
According to my GM contact, at the time, the bypass was for folks who never changed their oil-so when the filter got plugged, there was still oil pressure.
