    Re: MAJOR body panel replacement

Chuck & Wayne, The other day I removed the makeshift bonding strip from the more seriously damaged left side just to see if it would be more practical to repair or replace the entire roof panel. Still on the fence. Jack J.

Looks like the RH and LH fenders and B/S are good. If you change the roof panel and rear B/S, and maybe the rear verticle B/S`s you will have essentially an untouched car. I wouldnt consider doing it any other way.

Not much new information here, beyond the repair fitups being total crap. Also looks like the second repair left a piece of the first repair, i.e. they left the old joint and made a new one closer to the tail light panel.

I do notice that your LH bonding strip is broken off short of the rear panel...if it's visible from underneath the car, it'll be pretty hard to make that look right without replacing it.

Maybe Wayne's right about cleaning all this mess up. Perhaps old age is making me timid, but if I opted for roof panel replacement, I would probably farm that out to a reputable professional. My total ignorance of how C2 bodies are assembled might be causing that timidity as well. If I wanted to do the repair myself, I would cut it off at the original first repair joint (IN A STRAIGHT LINE!!! ) and try to make the repair with a small donor panel replacing the LH bonding strip from bulkhead to tail light panel. This would be an easy choice for me since I've already done a similar repair, and I know how to do it right.

That orange rear bonding strip would have to go as well...this would be the time to decide if you want the change the tail light panel to correct color fiberglass as that likely can be easily seen from under the car. As mentioned earlier, it all depends on your goals.

Similar repair, except using a doner rear.

            Jack,

Wayne Womble is the man you need to talk to and listen to. There is not much damage to your 64 in my opinion and can be repaired with your NOS piece and will not be detectable once back on the frame.

Wayne can be reached at 1 919 362-7052.

            Make the call!

Agree with Joe Ray. Wayne has forgotten more about fiberglass repairs than 99.9% of the people that profess to be fiberglass experts will ever learn. He has only been working on these cars over 30 years full time, not part time like most.

Ninety-nine point nine percent? ...You must be including about all those professional body men masquerading as "fiberglass experts".

Ahhh, Dickie, did you think I was professing to be a "fiberglass expert"? I'm just an amateur DIYer that has done ONE repair that I'm proud of...I hope that won't restrict me posting my experience here.

I can't disagree with you, and Joe, and Mike...Anyone that's loaded with dough and has limited skills should avail themselves of professional restoration. If Jack has several thousand to spend on replacing the complete roof panel, then Wayne Womble would definitely be a guy he should call. He should not go back to those "professionals" he's been dealing with before. Me, I'm a cheapskate that can't afford professional restoration...I have to get by with my "native skills".

Thanks for all the accolades. Chuck, there is nothing wrong with owners doing it themselves. I have seen some wonderful work done by DIY owners, and I always encourage them. I think they often do much better than some so called professionals, and I am sure you work is top notch.
