    1964 gage cluster

Would like to replace bulbs on gages and also the odometer does not work. What do I need to know about removing the gage cluster? Ernie

If I recall correctly the cluster is attached from the front with 5 black phosphate plated screws arranged around the upper perimeter. There is an oil line connected to the oil pressure gauge and cables connected to the speedometer and tachometer. You should disconnect those before removing the screws and pulling the cluster away from the dash. The wiring harness connections to the various bulbs, gauges and switches will limit how far you can move the cluster but you should be able to pull it out far enough to access what you need.

      Ernie -

Try these two articles - one for midyear cluster removal, and one for installation:

Just a minor clarification, the cluster screws are brown not black for a 64.

Ernie, if you un-hook the oil pressure line from the engine, this will let you slide the cluster forward to un-hook the pressure line instead of laying on your back on the floor. The same also applies to the tach cable , the speedo cable will have to reach hand under dash to remove.

Pull the steering wheel and drop the steering column from under the dash to give you better clearance.

Acquire 5 bolts, 1/4-20, 8" long and one at a time replace the 5 1/4-20 screws.

Slide the cluster towards you on the long bolts.

Get pillows, blankets, lighting. You're going in!

Pull the tach and speedo cables, the oil line at the gauge, and other misc stuff like trip odometer cable. Note the routing of everything.

Get under and mark every wire connector and bulb with tape before removal. Make a picture diagram.

Ok now the cluster is on the bench. Remove the speedometer. Send to a shop to replace the speedo head gear and side gear. They just plain wear out.

I just did all of this on a '67 recently. I brought speedo to Bill Harrison in Jupiter Florida......all fixed!

p.s. pull the seat to make it a little easier.
